Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Dry, sticky stools = diaper rash

Every. Dang. Time.

Before I had a baby, I assumed loose stools would be the most problematic and irritating, but those dry claylike sticky poops are the absolute worst. He doesn't have them too often, but if I don't catch them right away and they're on his skin for more than 15 minutes or so, he's blistered and screaming for the next 3 days, and not even 40% zinc oxide is strong enough to knock it out.

To be honest, I can't even figure out what the difference is. I'm not sure what in his diet makes them like that.

Anybody else have the same problem?

Re: Dry, sticky stools = diaper rash

  • You might already do this but I use A&D ointment (no zinc oxide) on DD frequently, especially at night, even if she doesn't have diaper rash. If she is even a little red I put it on her and it takes care of it within a day. It makes cleaning that sticky poo a lot easier too.

  • A&D oinment... DD is the same way, doesn't matter what kinda poo it is, I always smear that stuff on her bottom, also it makes cleaning her up a lot easier.

  • I use Desitin's clear ointment that has A and D in it. LO spent Saturday with my parents and came home with a hideous rash that is now broken open and weeping. :( She doesn't use ointment, but she said she did paint his bottom with maximum strength zinc Desitin right before she sent him home.

Ugh, it's awful. I've been putting zinc cream on him with ointment on top of it. I give him Motrin at bedtime to help with the pain and inflammation, but now I'm wondering if something like Preparation H would take some of the heat away.
