March 2013 Moms

Can we please put the soft cheese issue to rest?!

Seriously!  You can eat feta, goat cheese, brie, etc as long as it is pasteurized!  Almost all cheese in the US is pasteurized except what you might be able to find a specialty store or a local farm.  It will also say right on the package in the ingredients section - "pasteurized milk".

DONE, put to rest!

lolz....I hate to start another thing about the eggs, but I think it depends on the source...I trust my neighbors backyard chicken eggs more than store bought eggs because I know they live in clean conditions.  But the eggs should always be thoroughly cooked.

This. We have chickens, so I asked my doctor about eating their eggs. He said they are perfectly fine, and actually better for you than the ones in the grocery store which are probably weeks/months old. But to still always make sure they are completely cooked!!!

  • I had a nice big greek salad last night! : )

Thank you and well said. I was thinking of doing this too! Smile

Ditto both of you... except they aren't my chickens but my cousins.  My OB said she was jealous of the great fresh eggs I was getting and to just be sure to wash the shells before cracking and cook thoroughly.

Thank you! I can't count how many times I've had feta since becoming pregnant. I put it on sandwiches, salads, pasta, mix it in with my eggs, eat it straight out of the container. You don't have to give up your cheese, ladies!

  • I agree with the majority, but want to let you all know.  If you're dining out it's not illegal for restaurants to use unpasteurized cheese that they get locally.  I believe a lot of states ban it across border trading in the US, but restaurants are free to make their own or buy it locally from farmers.  It's best to ask.

You MIGHT find it at a specialty cheese shop if they were able to smuggle it through customs. You WILL NOT find it at a local farm. For those farmer's their livelihood depends on their business. They won't risk their farms and their families by producing illegal cheese.

I buy cheese from local farms and cheese makers all the time. They are adamant about not selling illegal unpasteurized soft cheese.

In fact, please DO get your cheese from local artisans and farmers. It is a better quality product and helps support your local economy. A good farmer and cheese monger will be able to answer all your questions about how and with what their products are made.

  • I've actually been surprised how many times I've seen unpasteurized cheeses on menus.  Where I am it's fairly common to have local cheese/meat etc.

But if I'm eating at a chain (Cosi, for instance) I have no problem eating their brie etc!

  • I eat my eggs over easy all the time. They are delicious, especially with some great fresh baked bread...yummmm! Salmonella contamination happens most often in poor breeding conditions (i.e. factory farms where chickens are wading around in their own poop) which are almost all eggs in the grocery store.

Hens that are pastured (i.e. what you would likely get at the farmer's market or from a local farmer) walk around on fields eating grass and bugs. They lay their eggs in a shelter and NOT in their own poop.

Salmonella exists on the shell of the egg, not inherently within it unless it has been cross contaminated during processing. If you are really worried... wash the shell, though that is a part of the usual process for factory farmed eggs.

Pastured eggs from a local farm have practically zero chance of Salmonella contamination. In addition, Salmonella does not cross the placenta, like listeria does. Even if you got contaminated and felt icky, your baby would be fine.

Meat doesn't need to be pasteurized. How is that relevant?

I was wondering this too. I know it has raw egg in it. I have been avoiding this and was planning on asking my Dr at my first appt.

I'd say generally you are okay. Caesar salad dressing has "raw " egg in it like homemade mayo has "raw" egg in it.

In dressings and mayo, the eggs are not cooked with heat, but there is an acid (either lemon juice or vinegar) in the recipe. This acid essentially "cooks" the eggs killing any bacteria that might be an issue and makes the yolks more stable.

So I'd say in general you are okay. If you are really worried look at the ingredients (or ask about ingredients) and look or listen for something acidic.

  • ^THIS. Especially for newbies who really struggle with it. Better safe than sorry, right? I think it's better to talk about it than to ban talk about it.
