3 year old strange habit....crossing eyes?

For the past few weeks, my DD has developed a strange habit/tick (?). When she's running around or excited, she'll sometimes stop and stare at her hand for a second with her eyes almost crossing. Then she goes back to playing. Its bizarre and I'm hoping its a strange habit that will go away. As a baby, she had severe gross motor delays and I've been to every dr imaginable (neurologist with an MRI, developmental dr, etc). She's pretty caught up physically and I would like to think I"m done with all these specialists (nothing was ever found). I'm trying to decide if I should start in with drs (I dont even know who) or give it time. The thought of starting in with something makes me cringe. She has her well checkup early November. Thanks for any thoughts.

  • You need to get her eyes tested. My neice did this and it turned out she needed glasses. The ped said this is how kids usually present eye troubles when they are young.

Agreed. My older son developed strabismus (crossed eyes) seemingly out of nowhere when he was 2.5. He ended up having surgery for it. Not to freak you out, but get it checked out. A pediatric ophthalmologist or an optometrist can do an exam.

  • I will try to relieve you. My 3 year old DDstarted covering her eye when she watched tv. I thought for sure she needed glasses. I took her to the eye doctor, then pedi and both said she was fine, it was probably that she just discovered things look different like that. After about a month, she stopped.

This. Glasses aren't a big deal. If you don't get her glasses when she is younger it could cause learning delays later and that would be a bigger deal.

Interesting. I was worried it was something neurological but maybe it is a vision problem. I'll look into that...thanks!
  • My oldest and my youngest wear glasses. My oldest has strabismus (or lazy eye) in her left eye ONLY. You would NEVER know she needed glasses and the only reason I took her to the pediatric ophthalmologist is because she failed her eye test in Kindergarten. My youngest has eyes that turn in a LOT. It got worse between ages 2-3. I went to the ophthalmologist and he is severely farsighted and needs to be in glasses as well.

Also, both kids need to be "patched" every day right now because my eye doctor wants to avoid surgery. So, they are wearing patches on their "good" eye so that their weaker eye can strengthen.

I agree. Take your kid for an eye test to rule that out.
