How much clothes for each size?

I did an inventory of all the baby clothes we have so far. I see some wholes in my stock and question marks in others.

So, how many, onesie (long sleeve vs. short), shirts, sleepers, pants, outfits, swaddles, rompers, sweaters per size is recommended? I am one of those moms that will layer my kid in a onesie most of the time except in the hotter months - so I know I will need a lot of those. But how many of each size?

 TIA!

Re: How much clothes for each size?

  • I probably had about 25-30 outfits per size for my daughter for each season.  Early on she'd go through @ 2 outfits per day.  But, once she got to the 2 month stage it was an outfit per day.

This is the one thing I am most freaked out/uncertain about. I am way overwhelmed by all the tiny clothes, seriously.    I'm not as worried about the first few months. I figure, while I'm home on mat leave, she'll just be in onesies and sleepers/sleep sacks? maybe? is that crazy?

and wait. So by 25 outfits, did you have that many onesies too??

For me, I would think the oneies will be on constant rotation in the washer? I was planning on getting like 10 white and having them in stock at all times... but, I don't want to buy a bunch of nb sizes only for her to go straight to 0-3. Am I off my rocker, ladies?

I dont think so...most moms I have talked to said their average size babies only wore NB clothes for 2-3 weeks, so unless your baby is tiny, I dont think you should stock up.

  • With DD, she wore sleepers with a onesie underneath the majority of the time for probably close to the first 6 months of her life. They were just so much easier than a whole outfit especially when you'll likely being doing a few outfit changes a day for the first few months.

As for onesies, we probably had 10-12 for each size excluding newborn. We never used newborn sized. The 0-3 size were big on her for a while but it was really not a big deal.

  • Glad you asked--I've been wondering about this too.

So much so, in fact, that this post reminded me that I had a crazy dream last night. People were looting in a Target or some place like that because something bad was happening (don't remember what, but I saw Batman last night so...). I had a moral dilemma about looting but then I grabbed a bunch of baby clothes. Ridiculous.

I don't have a lot of newborn stuff either--maybe 10 onsies of varying sleeve lengths. I figure I'll just get some more if Baby is small and needs more stuff. I'm also CDing and wondering if that'll help put Baby up into the higher category right away. And then I probably have maybe 20 onsies/body suits in the rest of the size ranges for the first year.

And here's a follow-up: do you guys have "outfits" with pants and such? Sweaters, dresses, shirts? I basically have all onesie or body suit type things for baby's first year right now. I figure I'll get some cute things for holidays and whatnot, but do people really bother with full-on outfits for babies? I see them in stores and kind of just... ignore them, I guess.

Sht, really? I thought I was totally prepared in this category, but I'm thinking maybe not after reading this.

    In 0-3 months I have:
    ~9 footed sleepers/one piece outfits
    ~10 long sleeved onesies
    ~10 short sleeved onesies
3 zip up sweater/sweatshirts that could go over a onesie
    ~10 cotton pants
    ~4 other pants
~15 pairs of newborn sized socks
    2 A+A sleeping bags
    4 A+A swaddle blankets
2 Summer Infant cotton swaddleme blankets
** The hospital gives each newborn a fleece swaddleme (or Halo?) sleepsack so we'll have 1 of those when we come home

eta: added something I forgot to list

I'm a first time mom too, but from all the layette checklists I've read lately (and I've been obsessively pouring over these lists) you sound spot on. The only thing I didn't see if hats and mittens...and you probably only need mittens for a little while after birth, right?

    GL!

  • Oh, I'll fully admit I overbuy every season.  I always say I'm not going to but I do.

Plus, I only do DD's laundry every 2 weeks.

  • I have only washed the hand-me-downs so far for NB to 0-3 months plus swaddlers, hats, socks, and mittens.  It fills 3 drawers in my dresser.  I haven't washed any of the new clothes my family has given me Embarrassed because I may take them back.  BTW this makes me feel really guilty but my SO feels no such guilt and says its just being practical.  After seeing Anita's inventory I feel like I should do this so I can see what I actually have.

Also, yes I have full outfits.  Onesies, pants and kimono style tops, button down tops, all sorts. But like I said, these are all hand-me-downs.
