Carrier Problem

I have five carriers and I love them all for different reasons. I could not get anything done without wearing my baby every day, and I love the closeness. However, my LO often gets frustrated in the carrier because she starts wanting to nurse. This happens in the Baby K'tan, Babyhawk Mei Tei, Beco, it doesn't matter. It happens even if she ate just half an hour earlier, though it's not every time. I have no problem feeding her whenever she's hungry, and I feel awful when she gets frustrated, but I know this isn't an issue of true hunger.

I've been giving her the paci whenever she's in the carrier, so that she doesn't get frustrated. Is there anything else I can do? I've noticed it doesn't happen if she's really distracted by looking around if we're walking out in public. Has anyone experienced this problem? Did your baby "grow out of it"?

TIA

Re: Carrier Problem

  • I never had this happen but I know it does for some babies - my guess is that she'll grow out of it as she gets more interested in the rest of the world.

If you are feeling ready for it you could try a back carry so she's not nestled next to the food ;)  Of the carriers you have, the babyhawk would be the one to use as it will allow you to do a high back carry.  The beco will not get her high enough so you'll need to wait on that one until she's older.  If you do want to try it, I have a post on young baby mei tai back carries on my blog in my siggy.

  • Nurse in the carrier. In many child carrying cultures the children pretty much nurse on and off all day. It is considered quite normal. Your LO obviously wants the comfort and nutrition, why not give it to her?

Thank you. I thought she might grow out of it too.

I may try the back carry on the babyhawk a little later. I don't think I'm ready to not be able to see her in front of me.

I have noticed that in the baby k'tan, the fabric falls in a way that sort of blocks her side view, and she turns inward as a result. It seems she's more likely to want to nurse in that carrier now that I think about it, and that's the one I tend to use the most. I may start using the babyhawk more.

I do nurse her in the carrier sometimes, but I can't honestly say I'm comfortable with her eating all the time just because she's in the carrier. If she weren't pressed against my chest she wouldn't try to nurse. I hold her for much of the day, but it's only when she's in the carrier that she's trying to eat more frequently than she normally would. I understand what you're saying but if there's a way to give her the comfort of the closeness without her eating when she's not truly hungry, I prefer that. I think it has a lot to do with her positioning in the carrier.
