Babies: 9 - 12 Months

No naps, getting physical

DS has been driving me crazy lately, he will not nap. He's been waking up much later than normal, even with the same or earlier bed time. So he's not even ready to attemp an AM nap until at least 10:30. And the PM nap hasn't even been happening lately. He just has SO MUCH energy. While he's awake I'll try and tire him out the best I can- climbing the stairs, crawling around the backyard, etc. But it's like he's just never tired. Then when I actually try and put him down, he just stands in his crib screaming and refuses to sleep. This is after I hold him and try to wind him down. While I'm holding him, he kicks me in the stomach - which is awesome with the pregnancy, and physically fights me. It's literally a battle to get this child to sleep. What the heck is going on? He is usually a very good sleeper and goes down for naps easily.

Re: No naps, getting physical

  • Could be developmental- he wants to use all his new skills instead of sleeping.

We saw a sleep specialist for DS and one of the things she told us was that 9 month olds are funny (i didn't think it was funny) because when you lay with them they will push you away and fight you, and then turn around and grab for you... so it seems like it is pretty normal.

  • My DS is almost the same age as yours and we are having some of the same issues. Not as bad though but he has started fighting his morning nap recently. He'll scream and push away from if I try to start rocking him to sleep. I have been slightly increasing the time he is awake after waking up till first nap and it seems to be helping. He went down much easier this morning. We are going through teething now too so not fun....I asked some mommy friends about it with slightly older babies and they mentioned similar things happening and that after a couple of weeks things seemed to go back to normal.

  • We had this EXACT same problem at 9 months. It was like the flipped a switch. She would go down so easy for naps, then bam! No naps, fighting me if I tried, screaming if we walked past her room. I let it go on for too long (about 2 months!!) then we started sleep training. We did the Sleep lady and it helped tremendously. For the most part, she is back on to two naps a day, about an hour and a half each.
