Moms with 34/35 weekers...

If you have a baby that was born around 34 or 35 weeks, did you notice that your child hit the developmental marks on time, or more around their "adjusted age"?

also, what would the adjusted age be, if they were born at 40 weeks?  ours were born 35 w 2 days.

Re: Moms with 34/35 weekers...

  • my girls were born at 34w5d.

I'd definitely say in our case, they are hitting their milestones closer to their adjusted age.

For instance, they did not really start crawling until about 5-6 weeks ago, and my older two kids started crawling around their 6 month ages. The babies are 10 months today and just now pulling up really well. Well, actually Baby A is doing really well but Baby B is still really shaky with it.

I don't know if this is part of your question or not, but their weights and lengths are on target compared to a full term baby, and Baby A is actually in the 97% for her weight and height compared to a full term baby and baby B is 50% on both. They were 4lb13oz and 4lb9oz at birth and spent 8 days in the NICU for CPAP/feeding/temp regulation/jaundice. HTH!

  • My girls were 35w5 or 6 days.....they are hitting milestones that of full term babies (right now) they are 4 1/2 months and have been rolling over tummy to back for two months...they are just starting to go the other way with intent. They have amazing head/neck control. Now they are looking at toys and bring their hands together simultaneously to get the toy. My pedi questioned me on my dates actually but I went to an re so of course they are spot on.
  • My guys were born at 34w 3d.  Thay have hit all their milestones with their actual age- except talking- yes they are talking- but they didn't have a lot of words at 18 months.  They were evaulated- which they did based on their adjusted age- they did not qualify for speech therapy.  Which at 20 months they had a huge language explosion and are saying soooo many words.
  • Mine were born at 35w5d.  According to the doctor, they are not hitting regular growth requirements for babies their age.  I'm not sure about their adjusted age since we're only working with their actual age.

I will say...seeing that both of my babies are below the 3rd percentile in all growth areas for their age was hard to see on paper.  My daughter's head circumference is at a 0% for her age.  Her highest percentage was .84% which was for her weight.

Developmentally...they are both doing really well.  They are alert and following noises they hear, especially our voices.  Both are trying to lift their heads to look around.  Both are also using their arms to lift themselves up.  So far all is good in this department.

  • I'm so glad you asked this. Our boys came at 35w2d, and I've been wondering the same thing...

  • Mine were born at 35w3d and they are hitting growth wise with there adjusted. For there development they are closer to adjusted age on most things. Some thing they are hitting closer to real age but most they are 5 or more weeks delayed.

  • Also wanted to add that mine are also hitting milestones that of full term ( or actual age) growth wise. 50th percentile for weight and 75th for height. One grew 4 inches in two months.

Also in terms of speech, my son who was born at 39 weeks didn't say a damn thing until age two. He had like 10 words.  He "qualified" for speech for early intervention but i didnt buy it. I too, him to a speech therapist at a very good hospital downtown. After 4 sessions i didnt think he needed help. Now  he is considered advanced in his language for a 3 1/2 year old. He speaks incredibly well and his vocabulary is amazing. He was just your classic late talker.

  • My singleton was 35w1d.  He did everything a little late for awhile but by age 1 you could never tell he was born early.

He smiled around 11w (forever), perfect head control at 4m, sat up 7.5m and crawled within that same week.  He took his first steps around his first birthday and is now quite the chatterbox.
