As I approach 42 weeks, I'm getting concerned about needing to be induced. We actually almost were on Thursday due to low amniotic fluid levels, except I insisted on a 3rd ultrasound which found a sufficient amount. Really frustrating that each of the 3 had completely different results!
One doctor at the medical office who knew my NB plans said that we could have them break my water as induction and hope that it got things started without drugs. When I got to the hospital though, the MW didn't support that and wanted to use pitocin.
I didn't think of it at the time, but nobody ever mentioned a foley bulb - that actually seems to be the most natural and least invasive induction technique. If you HAD to be induced, what method would you want?
Of course I'm hoping LO comes ASAP and am doing everything I can to make that happen! I have to go to the hospital today for another NST/amniotic fluid U/S and I'm hope hope hoping that it's still fine. TIA!
Re: Most "natural" induction method?
Yes, 2 cm and 50% effaced as of Monday. Hopefully more by now.
Hey, I read your induction blog post the other day and meant to comment, but got sidetracked by the kiddo. Anyway, just so irritated that that happened to you. I'm sorry
I noticed you blogged that you had your membranes stripped. Can they do that again? I would not have them break your water though. I think I really would opt for pitocin first over breaking water.
Also, have you asked your Bradley teacher or anyone else about fluid intake before your NST? I think it was my doula that recommended drinking TONS AND TONS of water beforehand. Since it has so much to do with fluid levels and since, as you learned the other day, they can be wildly inaccurate/inconsistent, you want to be extremely hydrated when you have one done.
OOH! The other girl I took Bradley with...her daughter came right at 42 weeks, I believe...her MW (Kaiser MW out of South Sac!!) recommended black and blue cohosh to induce labor. That's what ended up working for her...she took it at 41w5 or 6 days and was in labor 10 hours later (BUT, I would definitely ask your MW about this and not do it without their blessing...but maybe mention you know a Kaiser MW recommended it to someone you "know" and see if you can get her take on it)?
Have you been taking EPO? Have sex. Go for a long walk. Have sex again.
I made labor inducing cookies in my 39th week, and also the labor inducing eggplant parm. I'm sure that's all OWT's, but it was all also super tasty!
What about that preggo pizza in Roseville?
I've been thinking of you...hope this little peanut comes all on his/her own before you get to the end of this epic long post. Hugs and lots of labor dust!!
I used an herbal tincture called Mothers Star (picked it up at an herb bar at my midwifes suggestion) the day I went to labor. I also had my membranes stripped that morning. I was 9 days past due so it could have been a coincidence but it can't hurt!
I would probably prefer to get my membranes stripped, go for a long walk, and then have lots of sex (remember to elevate your hips and rest, letting the semen work it's magic on your cervix). I might also opt to try chiro or massage induction.
But if I HAD to get a 'medical' induction, i would opt for a foley bulb before Pit or ARoM. Good luck to you!
Thanks all, I appreciate the input! Just got back from my NST and baby is doing great! Wonderful HB and movement. Fluid level is a little low, but the MW I saw is fine to let me keep trying to make it happen naturally.
She stripped my membranes (again - did on Monday too). She actually said to stop walking because the placenta is already calcifying a bit and that makes it work even harder. But I'm going to drink TONS of fluids, have sex, keep up with the RRLT and EPO.
Stef she actually mentioned cohosh before I asked! However, she recommended against it because of my low fluid.
Come out child!!
Sounds like you saw a good MW, that's awesome. Come on OUT baby!!!! Thinking of you!!!!
I guess I'm different in any of the PP's -- I'd for sure want to be AROMed before Pit/Cervidil/Cytotec/Foley (in terms of in-hospital/birth center methods).
With DS1, water broke and 18hrs later, I had a baby. No Pitocin, no augmentation. With DS2, I had the tiniest pinhole, high leak. They AROMed me, and three hrs later, I had a baby (no ctx, 2cm at AROM). For my body, that's what's worked x2 -- water breaks, I deliver. I'm sure it could be different with a third or fourth kiddo, but that's the only thing I know, and it's worked well for me both times. Apparently my body knows what to do and takes over once its water is gone, whether that be SROM or AROM.
Hoping it doesn't get to that point for you!
I would also not have them break your water. What that doc didn't say was, btw, that's when we start the c-section clock. And it doesn't always work: my water broke, but only a little. I was on the clock, so my mw re-broke it after a day to see if it would speed things up. It totally stalled my labor and then I needed pit anyway.
GL!
You probably know the following advice, so I'll keep it brief. Try sex--prostaglandins ripen the cervix. Nipple stimulation produces oxytocin. Go for walks.
For my son I had an AROM induction. It was very slow and I was very thankful my doctor was flexible on the time line so long as my son and I were doing well. My son was born 27 hours after they broke my water. I also had already been having mild contractions before that. Many doctors will absolutely not go past 24 hours. It totally paid off for my doctor too. I pushed for a grand total of 4 pushes. I got my vaginal birth, he saved his Saturday! lol! I would only do that again under very very similar circumstances. I'm probably looking at induction again in about a week, so I'm going to have to figure this one out.
