Take THAT, shelter peeps! (Update to post below)

The puppy I wanted was in Seattle, which is a 4-5 hour drive for me.  I don't drive a fuel efficient vehicle by any means, so this would be an expensive puppy to adopt between the shelter fee and the gas.

When they denied me, I began looking at other options.  There is a much closer place that is just selling the pups for $200.  That's approximately the same price as what I would have spent on Seattle puppy.

They just contacted me back, and she has 3 males for sale!  I asked if she would mind sending me pictures and gave her my phone number in case she would like to discuss things.  So take THAT shelter!  I just may get a puppy after all, and I won't have to jump through hoops to do it.

I wasn't planning to mention the dog on the application, but they point blank asked if we had ever re-homed an animal and to explain.  I would have felt guilty lying.  I guess that puppy wasn't meant to be for us, and now I am looking forward to seeing pics of the ones that are local.

  • Yeah! So excited for you.  Pictures would be great when you have them!

Many, many years ago, MH and I were both unemployed for about a year after we both finished up grad school.  We were so depressed.  My MIL got us a puppy and that sweet little puppy saved us in all respects.  I'll also admit that we weren't 100% honest about our situation when we brought the puppy home.  They wanted to know that we owned a home -- not so much, we were living in my in-law's cottage.  They wanted the puppy to go to a home with a fence.  Um, not so much.  I still don't feel bad about withholding the info.  We are amazing dog parents if I do say so myself.  I get the shelter wanting to protect the dogs, but at some point, form rules over substance.  Sounds like they were being rigid with you.  It's not a reflection on you.  And no parallels to adopting a child should be drawn.

Have fun!  Can't wait to hear the name you chose.  :)

Agree - pics please. We were lucky adopting our wonder dog from a high kills shelter 2+ years ago. I refused to get a dog from a rescue for all the friggin' hoops and home reviews we needed to go through. Our dog (pic below) is brilliant, she chose us in many ways. Here's hoping that the puppy lady works out and you get the perfect puppy!

    Multiple ectopics, 2 failed IVF's
IVF #1: Did not get to ET, embies all failed PGD (major chromosomal defects)
IVF #2: We have 2 chromosomally perfect embies as a result of PGD (Boy/Girl) 1 failed the thaw (Girl) Transferred 1, yet ended as a c/p
Thought it was the end of our TTC Journey 6/20/2012

  • Oh, as a rescue volunteer, that's terrible to hear.  Please read up on backyard breeders (BYBs) and the harm they do to dogs and dog breeds.  Anyone who is selling pups for $200 in the paper is not a reputable breeder.

  • "Take THAT shelter peeps"? Really? You're that proud of supporting the very source of animal overpopulation and thousands and thousands of euthanized dogs because you want immediate gratification without having to put in much effort?Truly, genuinely, good luck with your pup. I hope someday you care more about what your actions cause.

  • Alisha, as much as I agree that encouraging questionable dog breeding should be avoided for many very good reasons. You don't know ANYTHING about this person or what she has been through, and I firmly believe that she doesn't deserve to be attacked for being lazy or spoiled or whatever it is you're accusing her of. My suggestion is to know your audience and to know when to make constructive comments rather than barging in and giving her a roll.

JLC, I know that you never really know what you're getting with a dog of any age, but considering the commitment and knowing what a difficult dog can be like, my advice is to do your best to try and get that well-adjusted, healthy dog and to bring him or her home with open eyes.

Hugs and best of luck. I want pics of your take home puppy too!!!

  • While good intentions may (or may not) have impelled a certain response herein, it's important that we not jump to conclusions.  I join others in encouraging people to make educated decisions when it comes to choosing the right puppy (including serious considerations of where the puppy is coming from and whether a particular breed is right for you).

That said, our dog came from an incredibly loving home which I suppose could be technically described as back-yard-breeding.  The breeders had two dogs they cared deeply for, had two litters and were done.  The breeders kept the puppies in their home and our dog was so well cared for that she was house trained by 11 weeks, because she spent all of her time with her Mom and Dad.  We don't know anything about the circumstances of the OP's would-be puppy and I don't think mounting an attack on OP is at all helpful.  Ask questions first, shoot later.

  • I am sorry they didn't let you adopt the puppy. Honestly, it is wrong. I do animal rescue and I often have to do home visits and approve (or not) an application. We often get applications of families that needed to rehome an animal and we look at the situation as to why it occurred. We are more concerned when we hear that a family "dumped" an animal at a kill shelter for someone else to take care of the situation. You did the responsible thing by finding another home for an animal that could not stay with you. I am really shocked because we would have welcomed someone like you to adopt one of our dogs. I would have certainly have approved you for adoption. I am very happy that you are getting your puppy but I encourage you to be careful with buying a puppy. Have the puppy vet checked - I don't want to see you get heartbroken if the puppy isn't well. The same goes for animal rescues - some rescues are not reputable and don't get check or even know their dogs behavior. I wish you the best of luck in your search for your puppy and as PP said - please post pictures!!! If you are ever in the market for a doggie from NJ - Page me! we specialize in hard to place animals (Pitt mixes, older dogs) but get many different breeds.

    Good luck again!

My black labrador retriever was only $200.00, so I really don't think the price of the dog corresponds with whether or not a place is reputable.  Labradors seem to be one of the most overbred dogs out there.  Of course they're going to have a low price tag because they are a common breed.  If I was getting some rare breed, yeah I'd be leery of a $200.00 price tag, but something common?  Price is not one size fits all.

The shelter dog I wanted was from Petfinder.  After emailing back and forth trying to convince them they were making a mistake in not letting me adopt the dog, I did some more reading about them on Facebook.  Turns out there are complaints of them denying a TON of people for adopting their animals.  They have turned down multiple homes because they had children.  Really?  I know plenty of families that have children and get dogs and don't give them up.  Is that really a qualified reason to turn someone down?  They'd be able to save way more dogs if they would loosen their restrictions just a little.  I'm not saying they need to give a dog to every home that applies, but their rules are a bit overkill.  While they could be saving more dogs, they are too busy screening out every single home for the dogs they currently have.  I can't even articulate properly how horrible I think their practice is.  And rumor has it many rescues/shelters have become this way.

I am sorry you've run into such a picky rescue group, and sorrier still that they have turned you off rescue.  I can say, with certainty, that a reputable breeder will not charge $200 for a dog and advertise in the newspaper.   But, as you know, it's your choice.

One last link and I will quit bugging you -- it discusses pricing and advertising in the newspaper:  https://www.boxermap.com/reputablebreeder.html
