Breastfeeding

How did/ will you do it...

My son was born 3 weeks early so they encouraged me not to let him set his own nursing schedule but to wake him every 3 hours at night and try to feed every 2 hours during the day.  After 2 weeks I let him set his own schedule as he was a great nurser.

Do you mostly let your nb LO feed on demand or do you wake him/ her at night for a certain period of time?  If you feed on demand do you start this from the very start?

Also the very first night my son was born he nursed at about 10 pm and then not again till like 3 am (the nurses said it was fine to let him do this but it had me concerned).  I know it is common that babies are sleepy their first night "out" but would you wake your LO for feedings if they won't wake on their own?

Re: How did/ will you do it...

  • My son was jaundiced and so I woke him every 2 hours to feed for that reason. If he had not been jaundiced I would have woken him every 3 hours to feed him until he regained his birth weight, at which point I would have started letting him set his own schedule. The first night I feel that things are a little more lax though. Both mom and baby are exhausted and so one night where they both can sleep (if baby is willing) can be a good thing. At that point mom isn't producing much and baby doesn't need much. A good stretch of sleep can be a good thing for supply.

  • I always feed on demand and never wake a sleeping baby . if the baby is hungry the baby will wake up. If my breasts filled up while baby was sleeping then I just picked the baby up and put my nipple to the babies mouth and she would latch and eat in her sleep. my baby was born on my due date and she is now 3 months and I am still breastfeeding on demand

Once DS reached his birth weight (around two weeks), I stopped waking him overnight and let him set his own schedule.  I nursed on demand during the day, but DS rarely went more than 2 hours between feedings.

I did this with both of my kids however we never had jaundice or weight gain issues.

  • My son was also born 3 wks early and he had a touch of jaundice so I woke him ever 3-4 hours to eat day and night until his jaundice was gone and until he returned to his birth weight.  Around 4 wks I stopped waking him especially at night.
