2nd Trimester

Circumcision question?

I was reading on my OB's webpage some FAQ. and  one of them was about when they circumcise. It said that my doctor won't circumcise the baby at the hospital. It said that we have to wait 2 weeks and have our pediatrician do it. Is this a new policy? I always thought it was done at the hospital.

Re: Circumcision question?

  • We had DS done at the hospital, but that's their policy. I know that if you elect not to, you have the option to have it done later. I always thought it was done in the hospital too.

  • Some hospitals do, some don't. Also it all depends on your pediatrician when they circ.

  • I was shocked about this too but DS was circ'd in the pedi office 4 days after birth.

  • It must depend on the hospital.  Ours was done the day after he was born in the hospital by the OB.

  • My son's was done at 24 hrs old by the pedi at the hospital.

  • It varies, our pedi was in the same health system as my OB so he came to the hospital and did it.

  • It varies depending on your hospital's policy & your pedi's policy. Personally, I hope not to find out what our hospital policy is :)
  • There is only one doc in our whole province who performs circumcisions at this point, and he's so old that quite honestly I'm not interested in his services. DS will not be circ'd.

  • It usually depends on dr's preference. Our original pedi doesn't do them so my OB did it the morning we were discharger ( before). The only reason he wouldn't have done it before we left is if DS was under the weight limit for the pain meds or they had problems with his APGAR scores.

We had to book it before he was born.  Here it is elective and you book it yourself at whatever urologist you choose.  The OB recommended we get it done between 7-14 days old which made booking it ahead important so as not to get stuck on a wait list.

  • Depends on pediatrician. 2 out of the 4 pedis at my office will do it at the hospital. Or, you can do it at the first newborn appt at the pedi office (about 3-4 days post birth) or you can wait however long (some wait 8 days for religious reasons...).

If you don't like it, ask the hospital if they have a pedi on staff that does it at the hospital. I find it odd that they wouldn't.

Interesting. Never heard this. I work in a pediatrician office and our docs actually notice that the exertion can sometimes push the baby to latch and suckle more immediately following the circ. So, if you're having trouble getting baby interested in the breast this might help. I'm curious which is true.

EDIT TO ADD: https://www.cirp.org/library/birth/mohrbacher1/ Did not know about this research. Personally, we had the opposite affect, both with heel pricks, blood draws and immunizations. Seemed to make baby more interested in latching.

  • Weird. Ours was done at the hospital (the day after he was born) & this one will be too. And it wasn't done by the Pedi, it was done by the OB.

  • I don't know exactly when she will do it, but the OB already told us that she'll be doing it at the hospital.

  • I had read somewhere that it was best to wait at least 8 days after the baby's birth to do it, but I forget the reason as to why that was.

  • My son's was done when he was a day old at the hospital. And unfortunately re done at 1.5 years.... they did it incorrectly... it isnt very common so be sure to ask the doc if there are any that need re done.

  • Thank you for all the replies. I was very confused because I thought it was always done at the hospital. I will talk to my OB at my next appt. And I guess I need to start looking into a Pedi.
