Pregnant after 35

Genetic testing on Monday. So nervous.

I can't stop thinking about all the what ifs. I am 40 and my OB office seems to remind me over and over about how at my age my risks of downs etc are higher. Really looking forward to getting all of this stuff behind me.

  • I understand how you feel.  I turned 41 a little more than a month into my pregnancy and was pretty anxious too and felt like I didn't really begin to enjoy my pregnancy until I had all those initial tests behind me.  Hang in there and good luck!

  • Good luck! I ended up having the amnio and everything was fine. Just because you are 40 doesn't mean you will have unfavorable results. Just take it step by step. It will be behind you before you know it!

  • I'll turn 40 either right before or right after the baby comes and I was also nervous during the testing. A healthy baby is still the most likely outcome for us and worrying won't help, but easier said than done! I wasted a lot of my early pregnancy worrying but as time passed I was able to get MUCH better about it. This will be our only child and I didn't want to waste the whole pregnancy worrying. I figure there will be plenty of time for that once she is born ;) Good luck with everything and just know that odds of a healthy pregnancy and baby are completely in our favor!

  • I know! I just turned 40 and we did the amnio.  I was so scared and nervous until those test results came back.

Try not to let all the ratios they give you freak you out.  My risk of downs was 1:42 and my little guy is fine.  My friend's risk was 1:4 and her little girl was born perfectly healthy.  Good luck!

  • I'll be 43 next Wednesday, so I understand!  I just heard back on my test results about an hour ago - I tested "Screen Negative" for everything, so good results are possible!  I have several friends in their 40s who had babies with no complications as well.  Of course, there is still a chance I may have a child with Down's, but I am at peace with that.

Best of luck to you, I hope all goes well!

  • Reading all of this makes me feel so much better.  I will be 41 when LO is born.  I had my quad screen and everything came back negative except my risk for downs.  It was at 1:62.  I was going to have the Harmony test done but have decided against it.  My insurance sucks and they keep turning me down or the specialist is out of network and I have a $6000 deductible.  I don't know about some of you but I don't have that kind of money laying around my house.

  • I am 40 and because of a 3.5 NT measurement I have had a CVS, an Amnio and I am scheduled for an Echocardiogram next week, so far everything has come back fine and if I had know that I wouldnt have had any of it, I have been a stressed out mess waiting thru FISH results then the two week results all to have them say everything looks good but something could still be wrong. Supposedly the echocardiogram and the anatomy ultrasound next week are the last of it, as long as those come back ok I will finally be able to enjoy this pregnancy. My point is dont be like me and waste your time worrying the odds are that everything will be fine!

  • I have had 2 level 2 ultrasounds and found out yesterday that our little girl may have a small hole in her heart.  So now I have to go back for a 3rd level 2 ultrasound and if the hole doesn't close on it's own, I have to go to a pediatric cardiologist for another ultrasound.  On top of that, the doctor and nurse were both pressuring me to have genetic testing done.  My husband and I agreed that it didn't matter so we weren't going to do any of the testing.  By the time we left the office, I was in tears.
