2nd Trimester

Realistically....

How soon do people go back to the gym after baby is born?

Im excited about going back to the gym but that's probably because I'm on bedrest. But also my new gym will offer ballet and aqua aerobics.

I might be a bit ambitious in thinking I'll be back in the gym hardcore about a month after baby is home tho.

  • More often then not you're given a 6 week window of no sex or exercise post partum. That's when you have your PP check up and they give you clearance!! Obviously you know best how you feel but that's the general rule.

  • Completely depends on your labor. I didn't feel really healed until about 8 weeks, but I tore pretty bad.
  • This is my first pregnancy; however, several friends of mine were back to the gym within 2 months... IMO it just depends on what you consider "hardcore".

  • Your dr will probably say no exercise for 6 weeks until after your post partum check up. I know by then I was feeling completely back to myself but then again, Ive never actually set foot in a gym so I dont know if I felt THAT good.

  • It all depends on how you're feeling - I went back when my son was 3 weeks old.  I was feeling great, and eased my way back into aerobics classes.  I started running again at about 6 weeks postpartum.

  • 6 weeks, when my doctor gave the okay.

  • Ha ha ha ha!!  I went to the gym until I was a little over 20 weeks and never returned.  Even when my body was ready, I was not interested in being that far from my little man just to jump on whatever my machine of choice was that day.  In the end, I walked two miles a day and kept an eye on what I ate and was more successful at maintaining my fitness level and dropping weight than I ever was when I went to the gym.  I like walking much more and I am able to be with my son when doing it.  My sister in law is much more hardcore about the gym than I am.  I think she shocked herself (and definitely me) by not returning either.  We both also have elliptical machines at home, so that is also an option for us.

Did you get a jogging stroller?

  • I just never had time after my son was born (for several months) so I also just ended up getting a jogging stroller and running/walking. And then exercising at home. I started at about 12 weeks.

  • A local woman who had her baby two months before me started an exercise class for new moms and you couldn't join until you'd had your 6 week PP checkup.

  • I felt great and started running again after 4 weeks. Doc gave ok. I also ran when I was pregnant until I was 25 or so weeks pregnant.

    It all depends.

  • I've heard you shouldn't start hitting the gym for at least 6 weeks so your organs can get back to their normal locations. Everything is a bit stretched out in there with the baby and you don't want to hit the gym to early because all that stuff might not be "locked down" enough for all that bouncing around yet. That's basically how my ob explained it... Don't want your organs bouncing around... no bouncing around.

I started walking outside the first week.  I returned to the gym at 4 weeks but took it really easy until my 6 week check up.  My OB would have preferred I waited to the 6 week check up.

  • I think for a normal vaginal delivery most dr.'s clear you at 6 weeks, 8 for a normal c-section.  My OB made me wait until 10 weeks because I had both an episiotomy and c-section plus a rare complication during delivery so he was being extra cautious.

  • I waited until I got clearance at my six week appt, then I went back about a week later. I was still so tired that it was difficult but I forced myself. I don't think I would go before the 6week clearance but everyone has a different labor and heals differently. So realistically I would plan to be ready anywhere between 4-8weeks.

  • As soon as you get the ok, which is usually 6 weeks. Of course, you need to find the time ; ) That's the REAL challenge! I'm there with you though. I still work out now mildly but I can't wait to be able to run again and get my butt back in gear.
