How is toothbrushing going?

We haven't talked about it in a while, and I'm curious if the LOs who hated it have started to come around.

For us, Maya loved getting her teeth brushed, but is on a bit of a strike.  She loved when we used the silicone finger brush and would cry when I finished.  I got her a regular toddler toothbrush and she liked that at first too but after a (short) minute wanted to take the brush from me and do it herself (chew on it, run around the house with, etc).  I let her take it but made her stand still, and that led to some meltdowns and her refusing to open her mouth.  I added toddler toothpaste this week which I guess made it fun again- for now anyway.   So, overall, I'd say it's not too bad.  We do it every night before bed and are working on the morning brushing- I still forget that one most days though (so much going on in the morning!)

  • She's tolerating it a lot more now, but I have to sing a song while I'm doing it. I use a toddler toothbrush. I'm a little worried for when the molars come through because the pediatric dentist said I'd have to floss once she gets 2 molars side by side, since the space between the teeth is usually where cavities form. That should be interesting!!

  • We do just the evening, and its not too bad most of the time (Caleb only has 5 teeth).  We also use the toddler brush.  Sometimes he likes to hold the brush, so I "help" and I also found he seems to tolerate it better if we stand in front of the mirror!  Anyone have the link to the brushing your song that got posted a while back?

  • It's going okay. We've found that if we sit her on the counter (while the other one holds her so it's safe :) ), she does much better! We always sing the ABC's while doing it, so most of the time when we get to "x" she pulls her head away because she knows it's almost over. :)  Then there's other times she lets us keep brushing after the song. She's been cutting teeth lately, so brushing has been harder since her mouth is so sore. :(

  • Julia only has two teeth, so I don't stress too much about it yet. We normally do it once a day. She has a silicone teeth and we use trainer toothpaste. She normally insists on doing it herself, but she manages to scrub on her two teeth well enough. Further down the road I'll take it more seriously

  • Kaydence loves brushing her teeth. We have done it before bed since she was 4 months old; so she is use to it. She loves watching herself in the mirror then brushing them herself after I am finished. The only issue we have is when I try to brush her top teeth she wants to suck on the brush.

  • Brushing has been a bit of a rollercoaster in our house. At first, she loved it but the more teeth she gets, the worse it's getting. The Elmo song helped us out for about a month but now when she sees the toothbrush, she points to the phone and will only watch and not let me brush. I like the mirror idea though and plan to try that tonight. She's got 14 teeth so brushing is definitely important for us! She's got her last molar coming in now so I think that's half our problem. :/

  • She does pretty well, but we do it together. I let her sit on the sink and hand her her toothbrush with a little infant toothpaste on it and let her go to town by herself while I do mine. She tries to mimic all my movements and spits at the sink, its so cute. At the end she usually tolerates me taking the brush from her and getting them quickly. She only has 4 teeth so its pretty easy.

  • I've only been doing it since he turned 1, and we were still nursing to sleep at that point, so it's still pretty new. Now I nurse him, read a short book, and brush his teeth while we sit int the glider. He's getting used to it, he opens his mouth now instead of clamping it shut. Sometimes he's extra tired and just wants to go to sleep instead of reading and brushing, but most nights he doesn't mind. He's only got 6 teeth so it doesn't take long.

This is what we do. He loves to do what we're doing, so we brush our teeth together and I go over them after Im finished. He has 12 teeth, and it's no problem.

  • DS still loves having his teeth brushed! I brush them first while he's sitting on my lap and then I let him brush his own teeth. As soon as he tries to get off my lap we put the tooth brush away, usually no tears are shed! :)

  • Someone posted the Elmo brush-your-teeth video a few weeks ago here and we have that on loop when we are brushing Liv's teeth. It still ends up with her crying and arching her back but is more tolerable. Anything helps.
