Need nap advice

We bed share with our ds since he was about 4 months old (before that he was in a co-sleeper) I'd like to have him nap in his crib during the day. He seems to struggle on his own without hearing us or "feeling" our presence.  Any tips on how to get ds to nap on his own? He will nap for about 10 minutes and then wakes right up. If he naps with me in bed, he will go anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours so I know he is a napper. Thanks for any feedback!

Re: Need nap advice

  • Take a look at the book, The No Cry Sleep Solution. There are awesome tips on transitioning from bed to crib.

I nurse DS to sleep for naps and then quietly get up. He only sleeps about an hour like that, whereas he will sleep 2-3 like yours if I stay in bed with him. It took me a lot of short, worthless naps toget him to sleep an hour on his own.mi just came in when he woke up and tried to nurse him back to sleep, then got up again.

It works for us to have a few 1-hour naps each day, and if I am feeling lazy or snugly I'll still nap with DS. You can try what we did or use the gentle transition method in the book I mentioned. Good luck! :)

  • I haven't read any books but all of the advice and methods I have been given sum up to creating a routine and making baby feel comfortable. For big transitions like from bed to crib it seems like breaking into smaller steps works for most people. I would start by laying down with him then getting up and leaving until he is sleeping alone but in the place where he is comfortable, then moving him to his crib and waiting for him to fall asleep before leaving, and when he is comfortable in his room alone then you can just put him in bed and walk away. The reason (to my understanding) that babies have a hard time sleeping comes down to having a sense of security. good luck
