Mastitis, again... Prevention?

I am currently battling my 3rd case of mastitis and I EP.

To try and heal or prevent mastitis I do the usual, empty each breast, cabbage leaves, warm compresses and massage, hot showers etc, but I still keep getting it. It is really starting to interfere with the whole new mom thing as the pain is so bad I can bearly hold my LO which is breaking my heart at this point. Once I clear one case a new one develops within 3 days and sets in, in only a few hours.

My question is, does anyone have any tips on prevention? Something I might not know about? BF already didn't work for us and I'm determined to make EP work. Mastitis is not helping.

TIA

  • Lecithin was recommended to prevent clogged ducts.

I am currently on my second bout in as many months and I'm miserable. I found this link to be helpful at least trying to figure out why so I can hopefully prevent it in the future.

  • 4th bout here. I haven't discovered the secret either. The KellyMom link is helpful, though. I'm getting ready to wean and am terrified I'm going to get it again while I'm weaning.
  • No tips, just empathy.  I'm at over 6 months of EBF and have my first bout.  I'm not sure I would continue if it happened again...although, who am I kidding, my son won't take formula.

This is the Catch 22. You are more likely to get it if you wean suddenly. HA! I asked at LLL on Wednesday if I'd ever be able to wean because every time I try to cut out a session I get mastitis (and these are the snacking sessions, not even the milk gulping sessions. I'm terrified!)
