Rock-N-Play Transition to the Crib (DISTRESS)

Okay, my boys are 3 1/2 months old ( 1 1/2 mon adjusted) and my pedi said that we need to transition them out of the RNP into their cribs.  I tried this about a month ago without success.  We went through two nap sessions and neither boy slept much at all. I am giving it a go again today with the same results.  They HATE their cribs!  I've put them in there drowsy and I've even tried putting them in there asleep...NADA. They are use to having boundaries being in the nicu for over 7 weeks each and then we started them off at home in their RNP.  Can you guys share how you were able to successfully transition your babies into their cribs??  I am one stressed out momma right now with two very sleepy, cranky, angry babies.

  • ..we just moved them around 3 months. They did great and seemed happy. No issues....you might be surprised....nighttime sleep preference can be different than nap preference.  And they change so much it may work out now.

Many do keep their babies in them longer....why does your pedi say to switch?

  • She said that we need to switch because it could start to affect their head shape.  Personally, I'm don't think that the RNP would be much different then a crib.  Trust me, I would love to not be fighting this battle right now and leave them in their RNP, but we've got to get them in their cribs sometime, right?!?  I figured that it would be easier to get them switched now as opposed to later, but I have no idea what would be best???

  • We started by doing naps, which were a game of put the paci back in the mouth for a while, then we put the rnp in their bedrooms next to the cribs, then made the move one night and it was fine.

  • Maybe start with night sleep. That's what we did. They napped in the swings for awhile. Or let them fall asleep in the rnp then move them to the cribs....only at night though. A lot of babies for some reason sleep in their cribs at night but not day.
  • I'd also start with night sleep. My kids didn't nap in their cribs til they were 6-7 mo old (they napped in their swings mostly). You might also look at inclining their crib mattresses a bit. That made a big difference for my boys.
  • We just went through a similar situation and we found swaddling with the Velcro Swaddlers to be our answer.  They were breaking out of their blanket swaddle and sleeping only in the RNP.   We tried the Velcro Swaddlers and transitioning back to bed and they worked like magic.  Good luck!
  • Our first attempt was a disaster. I found true womb swaddlers and the slept so much better in the crib. I think they helped them feel more secure. They were a lifesaver!

  • I started with putting them in a crib for a few minutes to play. Then the day I wanted to transition naps I fed them in our room like always and then took them up to their room to play on the playmat and then put them both in one crib when they showed sleepy cues.

Then the next day we didn't do any naps in the crib, but went in the cribs at night. It may have also helped that they had their shots that day. I just figured that it might confuse/upset them if they woke up in the dark in an unfamiliar place.

  • We tried at  8 weeks and it didn't go very well. We tried again at exactly 3 months per our pediatricians rec. also for head shape concerns. The first night has a few wake ups, but overall wasn't bad. They have done great since.

Naps are another story. Theyve never been good nappers. We continue to work on daytime naps in the cribs, but they still wake up almost immediately.

  • Our babies switched from the snugglebunny seats to their cribs at 5 weeks.  It worked best for me to just do it one night knowing that we would have a few tough nights but this was their new reality.  I swaddled them, gave them their nuks and also put them in the same crib.  I swore I would never do that but they were so much calmer and slept so much better when they were together.  We just switched them to sleep sacs and seperate cribs two weeks ago and they are now doing fine with that too.  Just try a few different things and find what works best, knowing that you will probably have a few tough nights but it will get better. Good luck!
