Anyone with a DH working 3rd shift?

Just curious if anyone's DH works 3rd shift and how you plan on handling getting to the hospital once in labor??  I know its pretty early to think about these things, but my DH works 3rd shift and I was contemplating on asking a close friend (who lives nearby) if I could use her in case of an emergency.  Hopefully that won't happen, but you never know!

So what do you plan on doing in a case like this?

Re: Anyone with a DH working 3rd shift?

  • Dh works overnights (we both do). I haven't really thought about it. I suppose I could ask one of my friends (we work together and work most of the same nights, so we are usually off the same nights. Otherwise, my parents are moving to a house about 20 minutes from us so I could call them too. Its very hard to get ahold of my DH when he is working but I will try to get him first before calling the others

  • My DH works rotating 12 hour shifts. He's on night now. He'll be on days Sept. through December, and then back on nights in January. But he's a cop, so if he needs to get home, he has lights and sirens to help, haha, just kidding! I don't imagine it will be a problem. I'm sure he'd come home as soon as I called.

My DH is a PO too!  But what if he's on a serious call or something and can't leave?  Yes, I always think of these tiny, petty things to worry about.....

  • My DH just started his field training, but his department doesn't do rotating shifts. He's doing their 3rd shift for the next 3 months with his FTO and then will get his own schedule. Once I hit 37 weeks, I'm hoping my MIL will come stay with me overnight if he's still on that shift in case I need to be taken to L&D in March.
  • Maybe I'm confused bc I've never worked nights, but what's the difference between this and if you went into labor in the middle of the day while he's at work?

He sleeps during the day....hence 3rd shift.  He would definitely be able to take me then.....just wondered about at night while on a serious call.

  • My DH will work 3rd shift from November-April. He works for the streets department in a nearby city. I don't think it will be a problem getting a hold of him, but if I can't my parents live 15 min away and my in-laws are 20 away.

  • My DH worked nights during both of my first pregnancies. Thankfully, I went into labor Sunday night when he was off both times, so in the end, it didn't matter.

However, our plan was to have my mom drive me if it became necessary and for my SIL to watch the kids long-term. That, of course, didn't work out in the end. Best laid plans and all that (water broke at 36 weeks, I wasn't waiting an hour for SIL to arrive to go to get my daughter checked out).

  • Ideally I will go into labor while I'm at work so I can just take the elevator up to the next floor and won't need a ride :)

  • My DH is a cop too! His shifts change! We have no family in the area and really nobody else we know well enough to count on! We just moved here so we know nobody :( ! So...my husband will be leaving no matter what and will be using the lights and sirens...if necessary! Haha kidding, but not really...he's leaving work no matter what! And honestly there's always more officers that can take over.
  • Like a few other posters my DH is an officer on 3rd shift too!  :)  Though he works for the city and we live in the county (different jurisdictions) sp?  Anyway, I'd like to think my DH will leave immediately but there's a chance of a serious call or that they are already short shifted.  He reassured me that he'd just leave but really, my parents and in laws live 15 minutes away so I don't think it'd be a big deal.   We don't have an official plan yet... :) good question!

  • DH works the 3rd shift. I have this fear (sort of) that he will be at work when I go into labor. I plan to call his best friend (who lives about 10 minutes from us) to have him or his wife take me to the hospital. DH works 30-60 minutes away depending on the night (he's a security guard) and I wouldn't be able to wait for him to come home because they can't always cover shifts where he works (so it may be hours before he could get home).

  • My eh is an officer too that works nights always. There should be a number to dispatch he can give you where you can call them and the. They get in touch with him and he then gets in touch with you. Also we are so close to all the guys he works with I have their cell numbers too I can call and be like I need eh now!  As far as a call goes there is always another officer or higher up who can step in that should ever be a problem. My husband was in the middle off putting someone in handcuffs when I got in an accident 6 months of with my first.  He looked at the officer who was his backup and said the arrest is all yours now and left to get to me. It shouldn't be a problem.
