Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Rice Cereal in bottle???

Trying to plan ahead and I wanted to get advice on introducing rice cereal. Did you introduce it in a bottle if so how much cereal and milk did you put in it? Did the nipple get clogged? What size nipple did you use? Our doctor gave us the ok to start using it because our little one is still acting hungry after drinking 8oz of expressed breast milk. So I wanted to get advice before I gave it the green light. Thanks in advance.

Re: Rice Cereal in bottle???

  • I introduced rice cereal on a spoon when he was 4 moonths old.  I made it really runny (I followed the directions on the box) and he figured out eating from the spoon really fast.  We moved on to veggies and fruits a couple weeks later.

  • Yeah, I wouldn't do it in the bottle either but try to spoon feed it.

  • At four months you're in the window of time for starting solids (some people choose to wait until 6 months but 4 isn't completely outside of the norm).  But a couple things - if your baby is actually hungry, rice cereal or even a couple spoonfuls of a veggie aren't going to do much to fill him up because the caloric impact just isn't there.  Lots of babies drink more than 8oz at a time so you really might want to think about increasing his BM.  If you do decide to go with cereal, do it with a spoon.  That's part of the learning experience at this age - to learn to eat.  Cereal in a bottle is sometimes used if a baby has reflux but that's because the pros outweigh the cons, which would be that it can be a choking hazard.  If you don't NEED to put it in the bottle, I wouldn't risk it because you can get better results with less stress if you spoon feed.

  • Never in a bottle, unless pedi-ordered for reflux or another medical issue. Use a bowl and spoon, and if little one isn't interested yet, give it a week or 2 and try again.

  • Same here.... we did rice cereal in a bowl with a spoon just to get him used to eating that way. But after 1 box (it actually took forever to finish that one box) we went right to purees. Rice cereal doesn't have all that much nutrional value, and is very filling.

  • DD2 had GERD so shes had rice in her bottle since she was 2mo, and at 4mo I replaced rice with oatmeal. She wasn't ready for the spoon till a little after 6mo (still had the tongue thrust reflex) but after that she's been a champ with solids. SO go with whatever works for you. If you do put cereal in a bottle use 1tsp per 4oz, and go up 1 nipple size or Advent has a specific cereal nipple that is FANTASTIC!
