Toys for babies?

I am age challenged when it comes to toys. I thought babies as in under 3 months were too young to really play with toys. However I keep seeing baby toys advertised. What are some of your recommendations?

Re: Toys for babies?

  • I don't really think we are getting any toys for the baby other than a Glow Worm to start. Christmas is a month after she is born, so I will wait until then to get her toys she can use throughout the year. I would much rather have stuff I need on my registry than toys.

  • Loading the player...
  • Stuff they can bite on when teething, mirror to look at themselves, playmat for "tummy time", things that rattle or crinkle, squeaky toys, and stuff with highly contrasting colors. Even still, most of those are not going to get much attention until the end of that time frame. You'll probably be fine waiting to see what the baby gets for X-mas, like PP said, before I'd worry about buying anything.

  • Really the only toy Auden enjoyed at that age was the bar that hung over him with toys dangling down.

This. And I think DD was just starting to acknowledge stuff like that at 3 months...

And, my LO started to actually play with them at 4 or 5 months. Even the tummy time mat she couldn't have cared less for, At almost 11 months she Just started playing with the toys from it.

Yes, you keep seeing them advertised to make a "need" that doesn't exist. Your baby is happy to play with you; the sound of your voice, your hands, your body. Maybe a simple mobile, listening to you read aloud, or some very, very simple wood or plush toys for tummy time. Play "peek a boo" and "itsy-bitsy spider." Use your imagination. Ignore the lure of the advertisements! Its a big scam!
