Too soon for maternity clothes?

I love to shop and would like to buy some new clothes... how soon is too soon to buy maternity clothes?

Re: Too soon for maternity clothes?

  • i just bought my first pair of maternity jeans yesterday.  The girl at ths shop said most people buy around 12-13 weeks.  Before this, I could still get on most of my pants if the bloat wasn;t too bad...

  • I don't think it's too soon...especially since before long the summer stuff will be moving out of stores.  Better to get it now in case it's still hot when you start showing.

  • The first time around I was SO EXCITED to buy mat clothes! When I finally started showing, like when strangers would notice at 24 weeks, I went out and started shopping. Low and behold I STILL didn't fit into mat clothes. I didn't fit mat clothes until late into 7 months, almost 8.

I still can't figure out how they can't make mat clothes that fit you throughout your pregnancy instead of just at the end. I ended up buying some stretchy pants in a size larger. Of course, those are the pants I'm wearing NOW, so I'm kinda screwed for this pregnancy.

  • With my first pregnancy I bought clothes pretty early! I didn't feel comfy in my regular clothes and didn't see the point in buying regular clothes in a bigger size. I went and checked out the stores and you will be surprised at what is out there for the little tummies. I just bought the pants that had the little band around the belly and those were just fine. As far as shirts go, you don't have to get the ones that are made for the later months. Just get the shirts that look like normal tees, it's cute to wear a tight tee with a little bump :) I am about 3 weeks; I am starting back to school this week (teacher) and had to go shopping for "school clothes". I found some regular dress pants that are elastic waist instead of having a button. The pants fit me now and have a little room for growth. Hope this helps!

  • I start back to school in three weeks and decided to order a couple of pairs of pants from Old Navy. I got a pair of jeans with the woven panel and a pair of khakis with the demi panel. I am able to still wear some of my jeans/pants but they are definitely not as comforatble as before. Both fit fine, have room for some tummy growth, and do not look like maternity pants.

  • I bought my first stuff around 6-7 weeks.  I was so bloated that I needed some stuff that was more comfortable.  I just bought another larger round of maternity stuff this last weekend that will hopefully get me through for the most part.

  • I bought just a few things at 10 weeks, a dress that I love for work and a few skirts. They don't look too "maternity" which is great because I am just starting to show but they are stretchy and cotton and SO comfortable. Way better than wearing things that were too tight around my tummy. Bella Bands are also a great way to get a little more life out of your pre-pregancy pants too because you can slip on the band over your unbuttoned pants and it makes them fit much better and gives the growing tummy some room.
  • I'll be shopping for some this weekend.  We have a tax-free weekend every August, so I may as well take advantage of it while I can!!

  • It's never too early.  If you're uncomfortable, at least get a belly band or pants.  It's honestly not healthy to wear your pants too tight.  It can mess up digestion and even increase your risk of hernia.

  • I don't know how far along you are, but if you'e contemplating getting maternity clothes, I'm thinking you're rather uncomfortable. If I were you, I'd only get a select few items, and go back if you need to.

With DS, I had a bunch of maternity pants, and they worked really well. I paired them with long tank tops under tunic tops, or something else flattering to pregnancy. I had only bought a few maternity shirts, and I hated them. They constantly rode up and they gave me a blob shape more than half the time.

I will do the same with this LO and save a crap load of money.

  • I bought a bella band a week ago to help with my pre-pregnancy jeans.  I know it's bloat but it so uncomfortable.  I wear loose stretchy skirts during the week.  I'm thinking I might take advantage of our tax free weekend to buy some stretchy/activewear type yoga pants for the weekends and evenings.  I'm holding off on maternity for a few more weeks since I only need pants for the weekends right now.

  • I don't think it's really ever too early to buy maternity clothes (by that I mean, clothes to suit you for your pregnancy, not necessarily pants with the full panel and maternity shirts!). If you're uncomfortable, why stay that way?? If you can afford a few pieces, you'll be so much happier. I went to Ross and got a pair of blue jeans (had a full panel but it still fit me, now I'm thinking they probably won't in a few months!) and dark khakis with a demi panel, more of just a sweatpant waistband. I haven't bought any new shirts, because I can make do, but I did get some sports bras because I've gone up a cup size already and they're just infinitely more comfortable because I've noticed how sensitive my skin has become. I still plan on picking up more once I get bigger, but for now these few purchases have helped immensely. I say buy a handful of essentials, because even if you may outgrow them in the end, you can wear these pieces after delivery. Everything has been so uncomfortable so far for me about this pregnancy and I am just so glad I went out and did this for myself early instead of trying to suck it up (and in!).

  • Thanks for all the good ideas/thoughts... I'm about 5 weeks along and only barely starting to show. My husband doesn't think I have a belly at all but I really do!!

I think I might just like the idea of buying new clothes/maternity wear since we haven't told anyone about our pregnancy just yet. Not that I really need them yet. But it could be fun to go look at all the styles, etc. that are out there and available!

I think that once you start to feel uncomfortable with what you have and what you're wearing, then you should buy some maternity clothes.  Lord's willing, I'll be 7 week tomorrow and I feel as if I need new clothes 2 weeks ago because nothing fits!  Congrats and good luck!  Keep smiling!
