I'm not even going to eat veggie subs at subway because they dont always change their gloves going from meat to veggies... I am probably being overcautious but no... I am not eating ANY deli meat, even though I have a STRONG craving for a turkey sub...
BUT - I did have some meat from the deli, I just made sure to heat it through per Dr's instructions prior to eating it... Rosemary Proscuito Coatta with Provolone on deli bread (mufaletta)... SOOO GOOD!!!
I've decided (after doing research and talking with my dr) that I'll eat the prepackaged stuff, but nothing that they cut there. I generally have an issue with it because I have no idea how long it's been sitting there, but knowing all that bacteria that may be on it is harmful for my baby, I'm avoiding it. Anything prepackaged has the "freshness" seals that prevent the bacteria.

I know in general it's best to avoid it but is anyone here still going to eat it?on occasion? Like good quality like boars head?
Before I was pregnant I ate sandwiches almost every day. Seriously. I have since cut it down to once a week. The last major outbreaks of listeria in the US were because of cantalope and lettuce so....
According to the CDC pregnant women are more susceptible to contracting listeria which is probably why most OBs recommend against eating it.
"Pregnant women are about 13 times more likely than the general population to get listeriosis. About one in six (17%) cases of listeriosis occurs during pregnancy." (cdc.gov/listeria)
The overall occurrence in the US is probably pretty low and a lot of pg women feel perfectly comfortable eating it while pregnant. It's definitely a decision only you can make.
Personally I'm not going to risk it--I know my immune system isn't great to begin with, and I'm not comfortable taking the risk. There are lots of other things to eat in the meantime

I just eat it up for 30 sec and I am pretty sure subway heats it a little longer when you toast it and I believe its on a higher setting for heat so you'll be fine. I dont eat the deli meat very often but I do crave a hot ham and cheese sandwhich or a turkey melt is always good.
I've heard you're supposed to microwave it 'til it steams. Does anyone know if getting a sandwich toasted is good enough to kill the bacteria?
No, toasting isn't good enough. I microwave my lunch meat. I make the rest of my sandwich first, then I add meat to a plastic bag and pack my lunch that way. When it comes time to eat it I heat up the meat to steaming and then wash my hands and then put the meat on the sandwich. Now I'm really craving a sub!
I had a cold turkey sandwich about two weeks ago but that was my one and only. I can live without it so I'll hold off until after the baby.
FWIW, I'm pretty sure the prepackaged stuff is much more at risk than in a store like subway. I did a lot of researching after I ate the sandwich and I saw that on several websites.

I ate it a few times a week when I was pregnant with DD but right now the texture grosses me out so I haven't with this pregnancy. My OB is fairly lax on her recommendations - I also got the green light for sushi (from reputable places).

Like most things, this one seems to depend on who you ask. My OB said toasting would be adequate.

I'm eating it, albeit not often. There hasn't been a listeria outbreak due to deli meat in 10 years.
The last listeria outbreak due to deli meat was in 2002. It resulted in 8 deaths and 3 stillbirths. Last year, 30 people died from listeria poisoning in cantaloupe.
I'm more concerned about prepared produce. Here's something to really scare the pants off of you:
Subway does have a microwave they use to heat the chicken for the chicken sandwiches. I'm sure if you asked them to heat up the turkey or ham before putting it on your sandwich, they would. you could also ask them for clean gloves. The subway by my work changes their gloves after every sandwich. At least they have whenever I'm in there.
On that note, no I'm not eating lunch meat. I like cold subs and don't relish the thought of heating up my lunch meat to eat it. That's just a personal choice though. I've been craving a turkey sub for weeks so I might cave eventually. I did go to subway for a chicken bacon ranch two weeks ago hoping it would help get the sub craving to go away.
I am still eating it, but not cold. Like if I go somewhere I will get a hot or toasted sandwich. I think its ridiculous to give up some foods completely when there is so little evidence. I have not been to my first appt yet so I plan on talking to her about what is important to avoid when I go in a week.

I usually heat my sandwiches at home anyway so I will continue to do that. As for places like subway, I eat it in moderation and get my sandwich toasted (which I would have done pre-pregnancy anyway). I'm all for not taking any unnecessary risks, but I can't worry about every tiny thing or I'll go crazy.
I didn't have deli meat in my first tri last time, and I think most of my second. I definitely made up for it in my 3rd. I'll probably have a sandwhich if I'm craving it, but it won't be a lunch staple or anything.

HAHA!! Yup! My general rule of thumb about eating anything is "everything in moderation is fine"--but "moderation" and pregnancy don't really go hand in hand...

I asked my dad this question during my last pregnancy. He's a doctor and laughed at me saying, "How many people do you know who contracted listeria lately?" Regardless, I'm playing it safe this time around too and heating meat to steaming. But it's a very small risk, so the choice is yours.
I am in the boat of playing it safe as well. I don't really crave lunchmeat anyway, so it isn't so much a loss. Although, I am pretty bummed that hotdogs are lumped in there. But is it okay to eat a hotdog that is fully cooked? As long as I don't touch it raw, right? One thing that I do crave is bacon and avacado! There is a sandwhich place here that has a turkey, bacon, avacado club... I just ask them to substitute with chopped cooked chicken breast and they do! YUM!
I'm not eating lunch meat. One, because I don't want to risk it and two, it is not appealing to me right now. I had gotten away from sandwiches this spring and started eating cereal for lunch. I think I will continue this once school starts again.
The quality has little to do with it- it's how its kept. I work at a deli and I won't be eating any deli meats while pregnant. The temperature fluctuates too much when they are out for slicing, vs in the case constantly.

certainly not, nor should they go hand in hand! This experience is such a roller coaster - its up one day and down the next, so (my take on this anyway) is that you've gotta eat (all the ham you want) when you can!!!

If that's what I want to eat than that's what I'm going to eat. I did it with my first pregancy and am doing it with this one. My Dr said everything in moderation and not to let anyone tell you what you can and can't eat - I kept that advice and do what I need to do to get food in my belly (I'm also sick all day long so anything I can keep down I'm going to eat!)

My father does food safety inspections at food pantries. For melons like cantalope, they are recommending that it be washed with a vinegar water mixture before it is cut to kill possible listeria.
