When did you stop rocking LO to sleep?

Just curious when you made the transition from rocking to sleep for Naptime and/or bedtime to just putting them in the crib with no rocking at all?

How long did it take to transition?  How long did you start off leaving LO in crib before going in to rock if necessary?

My LO is 14.5 weeks old.  The past 2 days I have put her in crib and only let her fuss for 5 minutes before going in to rock her.  Is this too long to start or perhaps too short and I should let her fuss longer?  Is she too young to even be trying this transition?

Thanks

  • I still rock DD to sleep. I've tried to lay her down drowsy but awake, but it doesn't work.

  • With DD1 we let her take the lead.  I rocked her until she was about 6 months old.  One day I discovered by accident that she would fall asleep on her own.  I laid her down to go grab something, and when I came back a  few minutes later she was asleep.  After that I started putting her down drowsy.  Sometimes it worked the first time, other times I had to go back in and rock her, but within a few weeks she was going down on her own like clockwork.  Now as a 2 yo she's completely regressed, but that's another story :/

DD2 doesn't really require "rocking" per se.  She is still swaddled, so I just hold her and she takes her paci and falls asleep.  Sometimes I do have to bounce or jiggle her, but not that often.

I'm not a big fan of forcing it.  They're only little once, and before you know it they won't want to be snuggled at all.  I know friends who were set on "teaching" their babies to fall asleep on their own early on, and it resulted in many nights of frustration and tears.  But DD1 was a very easy baby, in that regard.  If I'd had a terrible sleeper who knows what I would have done.

  • I love rocking my babes! R was older before we even started, really, like 6+ months. She was probably 15 or 16 months before I stopped rocking to sleep, but we still rock while we read before bed. I haven't started with Sam yet, he's young enough jus nursing him down is enough.

  • I haven't stopped yet, but it is causing some problems on his daycare days.  She keeps trying to just put him in the bed because she has two other babies to deal with, but he really likes to be rocked to sleep.  I just can't give it up though.  I don't get to see him all that much, and I refuse to give up that cuddle time.
  • The last few nights we've been able to put Ari down drowsy but awake. He rock him to settle him down but he's been falling asleep on his own.

We are going to transition away from the swaddle in the next few weeks so I imagine this might change. Also, I still rock (very vigorously) for naps because he is the world's worst napper!

  • At about one month old, he's is a good sleeper, doesn't sleep very long though, he just finally started sleeping 8 hours at night. But, right now he's going through something and I have to work real hard to put him down for naps, but he's fine at night.

  • When we stopped rocking I did it gradually over about 4 days. I was rocking her until she was fully asleep. Then only rocked her until she settled, and now I can just lay her in the crib and walk away. Very rarely I'll need to go back in to replace her paci or pat her back for 30 sec or so. I still get snuggle time when we are reading or having quiet time in the morning (I am not a morning person so we lay in bed for a while to give me time to wake up)

I have still mostly been rocking her to sleep. I have been experimenting here and there with laying her down drowsy but awake, and she has done great for the most part. I think I'll try gradually decreasing the amount of time I rock her before laying her down.

The only time I nurse her down is right before going to sleep for the night. She really wants to tank up around bedtime, and has been doing great this way.

  • When they got a big kid bed?  It's always been part of our bedtime routine to rock and/or read books (as they got older).  I probably started rocking them until they were sleepy vs. asleep around 8-12 mos old.

  • I still do.

At night it's more like, I rock her upright against my shoulder after nursing to get the burps. She's usually already pretty much asleep just from nursing.

  • I nurse/rock her to sleep...might put her down drowsy after that...but I'm not ready to give up that time yet :-)
