Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Should I call her doctor?

DD is 9 months old. She has been having diarreah since yesterday morning. No fever or anything. Last night she woke up around 1:30am and she had diarreah and it was everywhere I had to throw away her outfit and even what I was wearing because it stunk so bad. She had it again when we woke up at 5:30am and again today while I have been at work. And my mom says she doesn't want to really eat food but she will take a bottle with no problem. I'm just wondering if you ladies think I should call her doctor?

Re: Should I call her doctor?

  • My son just had this a couple weeks ago and it honestly lasted a WEEK.  If she's drinking fine I wouldn't worry because the only real worry is dehydration.  She's got a stomach bug and it's going to have to run its course.  Of course, if she stops drinking, give a call.  Otherwise, make sure all her sheets are washed and ready to go for the potential middle of the night bed stripping :-/

  • It is going around here too.  :(  My DS and DD have had it, and our Ped said it can last 8-12 days!  You can call and see if your Ped has experienced more cases, but more than likely, they will say as long as there are wet diapers and no obvious signs of dehydration, to wait it out.  Good luck.  My kids' poops smell acidic and ill-like; makes me gag.

  • Oh and I'm sure with 7 months under your belt you've dealt with diaper rash but this illness was particularly bad.  If you don't already have it, stock up on Desitin (we found the purple tube worked best) and A&D.  You might also want to pick up some Aveeno oatmeal bath because it definitely helped once the rash was full blown.

  • You might want to just to touchbase, maybe chat with a nurse.  There is a big bug going around that causes diarrehea and all you can really do is wait it out.  We thought our LO had it and the nurse said try to get LO to drink Pedialyte and more water.  She said to limit the amount of formula as it can make things worse.  Focus on your LO drinking more fluids to prevent dehydration and eat bland foods.

I'd def. call the Dr. though.

  • Eek! Sorry. Goods foods to feed a little one with tummy issues are Bananas, rice (cereal) and applesauce. They are bland and easy to digest. If I were you I would give the Pedi a call just to be on the safe side. Maybe he has some suggestions. Pedialite is good to have on hand too. I hope she gets to feeling better soon.
  • If there isn't any other symptoms and there is no fever then I would ride it out.  Make sure to give her plenty of fluids.  Try some pedialyte.  But for peace of mind you can give a call to the nurse's line.

  • DD just recovered from this. Pedi said as long as they get 12 oz a day (formula and solids included) and has 3 wet diapers, no blood in stool, no fever and doesnt have a dry mouth she should be fine. She also recommended putting a packet of culturelle in her food once a day to help balance out her tummy. It was really expensive but totally worth it.
