I failed my first glucose test. I went to take the 3 hour test and threw up because the drink made me so nauseous! I'm going next week to retake the 3 hour test. I am trying to watch my intake of sweets so I don't fail again. Have any of you failed these tests? What happens next?
Re: Glucose Test
Just watching your intake of sweets is not going to make a difference in whether you pass or fail. That's what the super-sugary drink is for; it mitigates any effect of your regular diet. The test is about measuring how your body processes the sugar you take in. Remember, too, that sugar is about more than just cakes, candy and that sort of thing.
In any case, if you fail, you will probably be referred to a dietician or nutritionist to help you manage your diet and learn what's good for you and what isn't. (See above about sugar being more than "sweets.") In some cases, you may need meds, but I think most cases are generally able to be managed by watching your diet.
They will likely also want to monitor your pregnancy closer since gestational diabetes can also lead to additional complications.
This same thing happened to me...I threw up 15 minutes after drinking that gunk. I had to reschedule, but I told them that it wouldn't be any different on the next day...so they gave me an anti-nausea med which just knocked me out, and they gave me a room so I could lie down between the blood drawing. DH was so sweet and sat there and waited for me for 3 hours in an uncomfortable chair so that I wouldn't have to drive home.
I still failed that test, but just barely. So now I'm testing 4x a day but my numbers rarely go up. My doc doesn't seem too worried.
