What is the cost of circumcision out-of-pocket?

Popping over here from the Sept. board in the hopes that some of you may have already paid for this out-of-pocket. Anthem is not covering any of the cost of DS's circumcision so I am trying to find a ballpark figure. I know it will vary from area to area, but I am having a hard time even getting an idea of cost. The hospital said the cost would be up to my doctor. My doctor said the hospital will bill it. Neither seemed to have any idea on cost. Thoughts?

Re: What is the cost of circumcision out-of-pocket?

  • I realize insurance varies from policy to policy, but I have Anthem BCBS. We got our DS's circumcision done at a clinic visit the week after he was born instead of in the hospital, per the recommendation of the hospital staff. The procedure was no different than it would have been had it been done in the hospital, but they told us it is cheaper when it is done in a clinic vs. a hospital setting. It's especially baffling since our clinic is attached to the hospital, so it's the exact same building, same staff, etc. Doing it that way also reduced our bill for the procedure. We were only charged the $20 office visit copay; I noticed in the EOB the clinic billed Anthem roughly $600 for the clinic circumcision.

Maybe you could check in to that to see if it would be true for your policy? FWIW, I can also attest that the same procedure is handled much differently by insurance when it is done in a hospital vs. a clinic. When DH and I were first TTC, I had an ultrasound done in a clinic to check for PCOS; I was only billed the $20 office visit copay. But when I had my ultrasound when I was pregnant with DS, I had to have it done in a hospital since my provider didn't have a machine in the clinic, and it was billed at the deductible/coinsurance level, and we had to pay for the whole thing out of pocket.

  • While we didn't pay oop for it, I remember the bill being around $350. My OB did it the day after he was born in the hospital.

  • I had my son's circumcision done the day after he was born at the hospital. My Ob did the procedure and the bill was $410 from him and there was a part on the hospital bill for about $350. Both were covered by my insurance and I have United

  •  My company messed up the start date for DS's insurance so I have been receiving bills for everything.  My OB billed me 325.00

  • About $350 if insurance doesnt cover it (they were a little late processing everything)

edit: I actually think the doctor charged somewhere about $100 for performing it. So I guess more like 450

  • We had to pay oop because it was considered elective. We were also told that if it was done in the clinic a week later it would be cheaper than if we did it in the hospital. The total cost was $350.

  • We have BCBS and they covered $7 (what a joke). Ended up costing us $250 out of pocket. My pedi did it in her office when he was a week and half. I wish it would have been done in the hospital so I didn't have to be present. It was an awful experience for both me and LO.
