This basically. My kids have hardly been swaddled.

this exactly. we had to unswaddle her around 5 weeks because she was waking herself up by trying to get her hands free.  she will occasionally startle awake now, but (oddly) only during naps. I think it just takes practice- starting her out in the RNP vs crib (less space to flail) certainly helped. GL!

  • We have never swaddled, used a sleep sack, magic suit etc..L just sleeps on her back (elevated due to reflux) in her footed pj's. I've noticed the startle reflex has gone away.

  • Claire probably doesn't count because she's never been swaddled. I just put her down on her back in a footed sleeper and she conks out. But kiddo is just a sleep champ.

Etta prefers to be swaddled. We're transitioning right now. She goes down "Napoleon Style" with one arm swaddled in her Halo sleep sack swaddler, and one arm out. Some nights we put both arms out. She also goes down on her back.

They go down around 9:30, Etta gets up around 4 for a feed, and Claire sleeps through to 6 or 7 am.

  • We never swaddled. He sleeps in the rnp. Sometimes I would gently hold his hands on his chest for a few minutes if he had trouble when I lie him down. His startle is practically nonexistent now
  • My LO sleeps in footed pjs on her back, we started this at 4 weeks. She does startle sometimes but she always goes back to sleep. She loves to sleep with her legs spread apart and arms up by her head which is probably why she doesn't like to be swaddled.

  • Thanks ladies. You think this is something that needs practice? I mean, if he has his arms out enough, will he learn to control them? Or is the startle reflex something that goes away with age?

That is Camdens same schedule too. Goes down at 9:30, up anywhere from 5-7 for a bottle. Up for the day between 8-9:30.

I want to get rid of the swaddle but I'm too selfish and don't want to give up sleep yet. But I don't think thats possible..

L went through a couple phases of startle reflex waking her up usually within the first hour of being put down. I haven't notice it happening for weeks now. So maybe they just stop after a while?

  • J sleeps on her stomach and side, but mostly on her stomach. I would not have been comfortable placing her on her stomach before she could roll over, but I have to admit I was pretty relieved when she started rolling and insisted on sleeping that way herself because she sleeps so much better that way. We have the AngelCare video monitor, and I just go ahead and put her down on her stomach now.

eta: she was also never swaddled with her arms in.

  • Well, for naps (which we didn't have a strong routine for and for which they sleep less intensely), they did startle from time to time.  They napped in swings until 3months old.

BUT giving them a lovie and/or hand access to their blankets gives them something to hold onto.  So they don't startle.

I would suggest that.  A lovie (we use Angel Dear blankets) or access to their blanket (we wrap around their waist but they can hold onto it there) so they have something to hold while falling asleep.

  • Ross will start out on his side but end up on his back.  He slept 11 straight hours the last 2 nights in his crib.  I hope this is the start of a routine for us.  Unfortunately, he doesn't nap well in his crib and if I want a long nap, it has to be on me!

  • I stopped swaddling at 6 weeks. We went through a phase where she would sometimes startle, but she doesn't really startle herself awake anymore. She sleeps on her back with her hands above her head pretty much every night now.

Oh, I could never have Camden sleep without his blankie! He needs it. NEEDS. Sometimes for his naps when he starts to startle on his side, I'll go put his hand on the blanket and make him grip it. It works, but never for that long. After another 30-40 mins he's startled again. But then again, thats what really worries me about him not being swaddled and having his arms free. He rubs his blanket on his face during his naps, and I'm fine with that since I'm awake and watching him, but overnight? Ugh, makes me nervous...even though it is a thin muslin.

  • He has been swaddle free since he started rolloing over.  We went cold turkey and he still STTN.  He sleeps on his back.

  • Yeah they don't get them for overnight-- I understand that.  I don't know why but they've never startled overnight.

Does it make a difference if you rock him versus letting himself go to sleep from pretty awake?

  • We had to I swaddle pretty early. She sleeps on her back, arms to the side. She sometimes rolls to her side and sucks her thumb or hand. She still startles a little, but she falls back to sleep on her own. Usually she sleeps 9-7, but now it's more like 9-6 since I'm starting back to work. He probably just needs to get used to it

  • We haven't swaddled since Madison was a few weeks old. She STTN on her back in the RnP at the moment, but we're getting ready to transition soon.

We have done this too. We don't have reflux, but LO couldn't sleep flat on his back, so we elevated the head of his crib just a little bit (blanket rolled under mattress). He sleeps from about 8pm to 4-5 am.

  • Amelia has never been swaddled much. Neither were my boys. She has always been a great sleeper. As a newborn she would get up once or twice during the night. She has been consistently sttn for about 2-3 weeks now. She is not swaddled as I said. She sleeps mainly on her back but she like to roll to her sides as well. She doesnt seem to be bothered by the startle reflex.

  • We just started weaning off the swaddle this week.  First we did arms out but nice and snug around her middle in her swaddle sleep sack.  Night 2 I loosened the middle a bit and last night we just put her in footed pajamas only.  She certainly does move around a lot but does it while she is still asleep.  She goes down between 730-8 and sleeps anywhere from 730-1030.  I was super nervous but so far so good.

I really agree with the other post about sometimes it just takes time.  We tried no swaddle a few weeks ago and she was not a fan but now she is all about it.  Good Luck

  • C sleeps in a sleep sack, arms out, on her back.

When you lay him down for the night, do you place him in his crib awake?

We actually put C down when she's just about to fall asleep and she moves all around, before finally falling asleep on her back. She does swing her arms around, but I would say that she is over the startle reflex. I usually stay in her room and calm her down before I leave.

I like that idea! I might try that! Usually by the early morning he's over the swaddle completely and I let his arms out and he still sleeps. But that only lasts an hour, and then hes up for the day anyway. But I will try your trick!

And Jen, I do put him in his crib awake, but usually he's pretty tired so he's out within 1 minute. I think I might just try it tonight and see what happened, and if he doesnt sleep I might try the swaddle around his middle. But actually, the problem is mostly with his legs - he hates them swaddled now. I may take his legs out and see what happens.

Thanks for all of your input girls, I REALLY appreciate it! I have a serious love/hate relationship with the swaddle.

  • Belly sleeper here up until a week ago she was still being "swaddled" in a swaddle me tight around the tummy arms out. We tried without it a few times with no luck. Then one night last week I decided to just try without it and she slept fine. SHe either STTN or gets up once, eats and goes right back down. I put her down on her tummy, she rolls and moves a lot but it doesn't seem to effect her sleep.

  • Emmy stopped being swaddled after the first month because she was getting too hot and didn't like it. We put her in a sleeveless swaddlesack and a diaper. We lay her down on her back but she often rolls her hip over and sleeps half-side, half-back (if that makes any sense). There are several times where she will startle herself but she never opens her eyes and always finds her fingers and comforts herself back down. She sleeps, on average, for about an 8 hour stretch, wakes to nurse and get a diaper change, and then goes down for 3-4 more hours.

  • Beener, Camden is like that too. He gets so hot and sweaty when he sleeps, so he is barely wearing anything under the swaddle, and still sometimes is sweaty. I think he'll probably like it when the swaddle goes too so he doesn't have that extra layer!

And ladies, I just have to tell you!! I just put him down in his crib, awake, on his back, NO SWADDLE, and he fell asleep!!! But but but, he has a bad cold, so he was SUPER tired. And he's propped up on a pillow because he can't be flat or he chokes on his snot. And...he's got his blanket. BUT STILL. Its a start!!!! Next we just need to take away ALL of those things and see if he'll sleep.. haha

  • Evie hasn't been swaddled since the first month.  She has been STTN for the most part.  She still sleeps on her back.  She loves to rub her eyes and face when she starts falling asleep.  I'm sure she's over the startle reflex cus I haven't seen her do that in a while.

  • I don't know if I really qualify because DD still wakes up once but I've never swaddled her. And we are EBF. She has always been easy to get down at night. I nurse her to sleep and lay her on her side/back.

I just have to say your siggy pic gets me everytime. She is SO cute!

Thanks!  I was jealous of your photos of Camden for awhile, because of how expressive/funny they are, but finally my LO is starting to get more like that in her photos.

  • My LO sleeps from about 8:30/9 to 5:30/6 and sleeps without a swaddle. Although she very rarely every used one to begin with. I put her on her back and she usually ends up on her side or belly. She rarely wakes up or fusses but if she does I put the binky in her mouth & shush her without picking her up and she's back asleep.

ETA: It's 5:30/6 on days that I work, on the off days it's closer to 8.

  • We transitioned to unswaddled but she still sleeps in the rock n play.  she has slept through the night since she was about a week and a half old.  the first time we put her down unswaddled she was about two months.  it didn't effect her sleep at all, surprisingly.  her arm movements are getting more controlled and she just sucks on them instead of hitting herself.  i suspect we'll have some problems when we transition her to the crib.
