Sick Baby! And 2 Questions...

Hi, Ladies!

My poor little munchkin has Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease. It is a nasty little virus, but my pediatrician says there is nothing we can do - it must run its course. So here are my questions, for you experienced mamas:

1. LO has sores in his mouth, insides of his cheeks, tongue, tonsils, etc. They hurt, and he really doesn't.want to nurse, but he does ok with easy solids like applesauce. He eats enough that I haven't felt engorged, but I am more full than usual. Any tips on how I can encourage him to nurse, and at one point should I drag the pump out of the closet? Should I be worried about my supply?

 2. LO has had very few wet diapers but several dirty today, and he now has bad sores on his rump from this virus. The pediatrician says not to use diaper rash cream, but this kid is in serious pain. I let him play naked for a while this evening, and gave him a bath before bed, but he screamed when I put on his diaper. What do you do for a diaper rash when no creams are allowed?

Thanks so much! Only other detail I can think of to share are that we rotate Motrin and Tylenol every 4 hours for fever.

Re: Sick Baby! And 2 Questions...

  • I would pump a bit, but only for a few minutes at a time.

I would give him a bath everyday, and lots of naked butt time (maybe outside?). We used to dump a good amount of baking soda into the water when my older son had bad butt rash, just rinse him off afterwards. I also don't know if it'd burn on his skin, it never seemed to bother my son.

Take care, my older son HFM last year,it's a nasty virus.

  • Poor guy.  My first got it when he was 2 (from the LO I babysat, she had it HORRIBLE!).  Maybe look it up and see if you can use virgin coconut oil on him?  I don't know why you couldn't.  I think that would feel really good.  Or maybe some finely ground oatmeal in his diaper.  Do you use cloth diapers?  If not, can you sacrifice some receiving blankets or something and cut them up to put between his skin and the diapers so he's up against something soft?  Or even a piece of fleece as that will pull the moisture away, it might be stinging.

  • We've got it here, too.

I'm alternating tylenol and advil as his fever gets high, just gave him an oatmeal bath (run oatmeal through the food processer or blender and add to the bath), and coconut oil on the butt rash. Poor guy is pretty miserable.

  • Coconut oil is a great idea! I hate seeing our little guy so miserable. I think we're about half way through it all. Sorry you've got it too!
