GERD

Evening,

Does anyone have any advice for dealing with acid reflux? I've tried everything we can think of, but we have to give the hypoallergenic formula a few days to work before our pediatrician will refer us to a GI specialist... I'm already pretty sure that my son is doing worse on the hypoallergenic formula than he was on the enfamil AR. I'm so tired of watching him cry during and after feeds... and watching him spend 40 minutes eating and still rooting immediately afterwards. He's growing well so far, but everytime he has a string of bad meals I start to worry that he'll have to go back to the NICU...

My son is already on zantac (prevacid was a complete failure) and bethanecol, and he sleeps on an incline.

 Thanks in advance!

Re: GERD

  • I would request the GI referral now.  At least where I live there tends to be at least a several week wait to get in as a new patient.  You can always cancel if you no longer needed the appointment.

Meds are the only thing that help my boys. Prilosec helps J tremendously but the dose has to be adjusted frequently based on weight gain.  S is on Prevacid solutabs, 1/4 a pill 2x a day.   Splitting the dose to twice a day has made all the difference to us.  I wish I had some magic cure to give you but I don't.  Reflux sucks!

  • We also have had a lot of improvement with prevacid and zantac together - DD gets 15mg solutab (the whole one) in the am and we do 2mls of zantac before bed - we also feed in an sitting or semi-sitting position, stay upright for about 20 minutes after the meal and you already said hes sleeping on an incline - all of those things helped us - I will tell you I tried everything before I decided to agree to medicate - once we did she was a completely different baby - I didnt really realize how much she was suffering from it until we started the meds and she was eating better, sleeping way better and was actually happy all the time.... I would probably push to see the GI - they can test for milk protien allergies etc. and really problem solve with you. Reflux really does suck but it gets better. GL mama - OH and we tried a bunch of different specialty formulas and found that she did best on plain old similac advance - a lot of the specialty formulas use corn syrup solids and the main ingredient - Similac normal uses cow milk protiens - DD never had any allergies or sensitivity to milk protien but corn syrup solids actually made her spitting up issues worse - not to mention she would bounce off the walls from all the sugar.....

  • It's really rough and I'm sorry your LO is going through it...I remember it being horrible to watch and feel so helpless. I agree with PP make the GI appt now - it takes a while. We wound up not needing to go by the time it rolled around, so the worst thing that can happen is you cancel.

DS was pretty bad - he was on a combo of Zantac & Previ. He had bradys from them for months, but that doesn't sound like something you're dealing with. The RNP was helpful, but not magic. I wound up sleeping with him by my side sitting up. Putting a hot water bottle on his belly during bad spells seemed to be a comfort.

All of this helped us a lot too. The only thing I would add is that even though it seems like they are spitting up a TON of milk, often its not as much as you think. Try spilling a tbs of milk on the kitchen counter. It helped me see how even a little bit looks like a whole lot when its running everywhere.

Oh and check out the Preemie Resource blog-we just did a whole series on reflux that might be helpful to you as well.

  • Thanks for all of the helpful responses. I really appreciate all of the sympathy.  It also helps to put my son's issues in perspective... he only bradys when he outgrows his zantac dose (e.g., once a week / every other week or so) or when I try something new that fails (e.g., the alimentum / prevacid without zantac).  So at least I have that to be thankful for... I know it could be much worse, but I hate seeing him so uncomfortable so much of the time.
