How do you photograph sleeping LO...

without waking them up with the flash?  As a 2+ mum you'd think I would know this, but frankly we don't have any sleeping DS1 photos, except on the airplane.

I really want to take a pic of DS2 when he's in bed but can't bring myself to go in there and flash away..

What do you do?

PS: my iphone camera sucks, I'm talking about a DSLR with a massive flash.

Re: How do you photograph sleeping LO...

  • Most of my sleeping pictures are taken during naps when it's lighter in the room... one time she was really really cute at night and I tried to take a picture but the flash totally woke her up and she was NOT happy, I don't recommend it.

  • I take mine during the day when she's napping in a chair.  My house is busy and she's used to the activity, so the sound of the camera doesn't wake her.  I usually don't use the flash and just use natural lighting.  Maybe try during the day?

  • Most of ds's sleeping pics are all from when he was sleeping in the living room when it was daytime so the flash didn't bother him. I tried in his room before and it has woke him up, not always though.

P.S. Are you very glad that you are on a different timezone so that you missed a lot of the craziness that happened here?

Oh yes I'm very glad.  I was totally WOAH but then read a few recaps and I think I'm all caught up now:)

Thanks ladies, I'll try during nap!  Maybe at the end of naptime so if he wakes up it's NBD.

  • Camera on a tripod.  Light the room as much as possible without disturbing baby.  You want a wide aperture (low f stop) and a slow shutter speed.  Avoid using the flash this way.
  • I just wait until she is in a deep sleep - she's never woken up to my flash.
