FTM trying to bf - Need help!

Hello!

My little guy was born on Monday at 34 weeks and is in the NICU (doing really well though!)

I am trying to pump  every 3-4 hours and am only getting a little out. I know this is normal, but I am in some pain. My breasts are huge and hard and tender. Any tips or thoughts? I am going to call the lactation consultant in the morning, but thought I would start here...

Thanks so much for your help!

  • Sounds like engorgement! That is actually a good sign I think, but you'll want to correct it within the next day or two. A lactation consultant will definitely be able to help. You can try massaging lightly at the base of your breasts, going in a circle all the way around.Do this for a couple of minutes right before you pump and it should help. Once you are able to pump until your breasts are softened and emptied, just pump frequently to keep it from coming back. I remember lying on the floor in complete agony around 1 or 2 weeks. No fun. I hope your little guy is doing good!

  • I forgot to say I agree with PP, that if you do hand expression for a minute or so, then pump, it might help get things going.
  • I had this happen to me. I took a hot shower and massaged my breasts in the shower and tried hand expressing. It worked for me.
