State Disability and Paid Family Leave

Hi Moms,

I'm looking for people who've navigated the waters of SDI and PFL. I'm a temp/contract employee and I don't know if I'm eligible for PFL. I'd like to take 12 weeks instead of just the 6, but I can't afford to unless I have some kind of income. Anyone have any personal stories or advice?

The extent of my knowledge is that public school teachers do not pay into the state disability, so I do not qualify for it. I went through figuring this all out and got both paid out. My employment is complicated because most of my income is 1099, but I have one w2 gig that pays into CASDI. You have to pay into CASDI to receive the benefit as the previous poster stated. You can buy into the program as an independent person, but the math is hard to work out. Plus, you have to have bought into the program for some time before you can reap the benefits. I can't remember the exact time period, other than I think it's more than 9 months. You can try calling the office, the people I spoke with, once you actually get through to a person, were very helpful.
