As a FTM I'm not sure if I want to stay at my house until my water breaks, or the pain is unbearable. I don't think I want to go in at the first sign of labor. What did you do or are you planning on doing?
With DD, we headed to the hospital when I couldn't talk through contractions - I didn't realize that was I was experiencing was full on contractions, but when we called my practitioner; she heard how I was acting and said we could come in - by the time we got there, I was already 8cm,
With DS I knew 30 minutes after my very first contraction I needed to get to the hospital immediately. My husband & I worked 3 minutes from home & could see the hospital from the house. I called him & he left work to meet me at home &w left as soon as he got there (a few minutes after me). When I got to the hospital I was already 7cm. Needless to say my labor with DS went very quickly. From that first "was that a contraction" to him popping out was 5 hours. Because I was so far along when I got to the hospital they said I needed to get my epi then & there or I would not get one. Since I've heard subsequent labors go quicker I'm nervous that I'll miss out on the epi this time as I live further away from the hospital now.

I read this somewhere and thought it was neat advice: if it takes you less than ten minutes to get to the car, you're leaving too early.
However, I think the 5-1-1 (3-1-1) rules maybe leave less room for interpretation: Contractions are 5 (3) minutes apart, lasting a minute each, for at least an hour.
I have also read (more humorous): if you still care about the way you look (makeup/hair) then you are leaving too early.
Anyway, I'm a FTM so I have no first hand experience, but do plan to labor at home for as long as possible.
With DS1, I was dilated to 3cm and having contractions every 3min and they STILL sent me home, telling me I was in labor, but not far enough into labor to stay. If you are not in ACTIVE LABOR, ie: water has broken or in a lot of pain with productive contractions, they will send you home. Even if you are in early labor, they will send you home until you progress. I was back in 2hrs later and had dilated another cm, so they kept me stating I was in "active labor" at that point. Stay at home until your contractions are uncomfortable. First labors usually take HOURS (as in 12 or more), so don't stress about making it "on time."

I am on my fourth baby and have never had that exciting head to the hospital moment. I guess I watch too many movies. With my first and second baby the Dr. told me to go to the hospital I was 6 cm and 5 cm and both babies were so low. I noticed contractions but they were never regular, but it concerned him sending me home. He said when I went it would be fast. All of my deliveries are about an hour, after they break my water.
I plan to labor at home with a doula and my husband. when we all mutually agree that it's time to head to the hospital then I will but I hope to labor as long as possible in the comfort of my home.
I was induced with Auden, but I plan to labor at home as long as possible.
I plan on going med-free again, so the race to the hospital for an epi is not a big deal for me. We are maybe 5-6 minutes from the hospital, so I have the feeling DH will be making me leave to go.
My water broke at 8am when I had parked at work, so I called my NP and waited for my H to come pick me up. We work 30 mins apart, so when we finally got to the hospital it was probably 930am.
I didn't have any contractions at this point soo there was no pain, just the uncomfortable wet feeling. I literally say on my windshield sun shade so I didn't soak my seat!
Unless you schedule an induce date you can't really pick when your water breaks and be at the hospital already. But if your water breaks you have to go in, no ifs ands or buts!
Side story:
When we Got into our room and they hooked me up to all the machines, I had to pee, they wouldn't let me get up to pee I had to stay in my bed. The nurse told us that a women was in labor, she got out of bed to use the restroom and when she got back in her bed there wasn't a heartbeat for her baby anymore. Something about the standing then sitting then standing to go lay down had moved the unbilical cord and the baby didn't make it.
Uggh, I'm so nervous about this! We're about 40 min. from our hospital. And I really want to labor at home for as long as possible. I'm actually considering getting a room at the hotel next to the hospital if that makes sense when we get closer.
"A new baby is like the beginning of all things--wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities."
After three births, I will wait until the last minute. I went in at 8 cm last time, and I know my body now and I know when things ate about to get serious.

we are that far as well.. just keep in touch with your dr. when you go into labor. they will let you know when they think you should head in.
Reading these posts make me nervous and sweaty... I would NEVER wait.
I realize everyone is different, but as a FTM I didn't expect to go into labor 2 weeks early, or have a SUPER fast delivery. If I would have waited until contractions started, I would have had her on the side of the road.
My water broke 2:30am. Hung out for a few mins to make sure it was the real thing... Stood up and had another gush. Yup. Asked DH if we should wait for contractions to start and he said it was up to me... Knowing my water had broken, I knew they couldn't turn me away. So I took my time, showered, and left for the hospital. We arrived @ 4am, walked into the hospital and felt great, got me into a bed, checked me (5cm, 90%). Not feeling a single thing... 4:30 and my tune changed. QUICKLY. one contraction ontop of another- checked me again- A FULL 10cm. They had to call the Dr, and waited until she arrived at 5 to start pushing. Had DD at 6:25.
I know everyone is different, but I'd (and am planning to!) go to the hospital ASAP.
With my first, my water broke and I headed to the hospital, then nothing happened and I was induced about 7 hours later. My understanding is that many women's water does not break, so you do have to watch contractions and stuff. For me, I err on the safe side and will head to the dr when something starts happening. I'd hate to wait and not make it.

I plan on waiting as long as I can stand it - and that includes if my water breaks. I know they have a 24hr rule about your water breaking, but, that doesn't mean I have to go in 5 minutes after it breaks, either. So, we'll just see how I feel.
I'm hoping to hire a doula, but haven't made a decision on who yet. She will probably help us decide if its time as well.

...and now you have just given me one other hopeful story that, as a FTM, my labor has the potential of going by fast and that my LO can come early. Am I the only one that clings to these stories?
I can't stand everyone saying, "Oh, first time babies usually like to stay in there nice and comfy", "You'll go over you're due date for sure", etc. Bleghhh.

Pssssh, girl you just never know! I NEVER thought i'd go fast or early. EVER. My moms' labors were 17hrs, 19hrs, and 26hrs long.....

I live 30 minutes from my hospital and doc's office is adjacent to the hospital building. I will head to the hospital about the time I can't speak through contractions. If my water breaks, same thing. I want to labor at home as long as possible. If something odd happens and I wind up at the hospital "too early", we will stay there. They may not admit you, but you can certainly go pace the waiting room or parking lot or whatever.

No offense but this sounds like nonsense. If that were the case, we wouldn't be "allowed" to move around during labor or birth in positions other than the lithotomy position. Chances are she had other issues involved and that it wasn't just going pee that messed everything up in there... It kind of sounds like the fear-mongering stories people love to tell pregnant women and scare the crap out of us with. Also, many times you have 24hrs+ from the time your water breaks to begin contractions before most practitioners recommend induction/or heading ot the hospital. There is a paper I read on the subject that suggests going longer than that, but my hospital recommends at most 24hrs. I think it just depends on your situation and your hospital's policy.
As per our wishes and our midwives' recommendations, we will be laboring at home until the as long as possible before heading in. We are doing a natural birth, so no epi rush for us. We only live about 5mins from our hospital. The only thing I'm nervous about is snow (I live in Idaho and the hospital is up the side of a mountain/giant hill thing), so depending on how the weather looks come the end of November we may head out earlier.
