Pregnant after 35

c-section always 1 week before?

I am most likely going to have a c-section (I had a c-section with my previous pregnancy, but possible I could have a VBAC). So if I have a c-section, do they always schedule you at 39 weeks?  I am trying to figure out maternity leave and when the baby will start daycare. Would like the birth date to be as close to my due date as possible so we can start him in daycare as close to the end of flu season as we can. I know it sometimes go into April.

Re: c-section always 1 week before?

  • I have a friend who has had 3 C-sections, and each one was scheduled for around 39 weeks. I believe the docs do this because (especially for repeat Cs) they don't want you to start labor on your own. I'm not really sure what the pros/cons are for VBAC but I do believe it's quite common to schedule a C at 39 weeks - so baby is as close to fully cooked as possible without the risk (whatever that risk may be) to mom going into vaginal labor.

  • I know they're often at 39 weeks because of RCS, placenta previa or other issues. Haven't heard it so much for 1st time c/s.
  • I'm having a repeat c/s and they said I could schedule any time after 39 weeks.

  • Mine is booked 3 days before my due date.  I may still have a VBAC though, but the Dr wanted to book it just incase.

  • My last c-section was scheduled and it was two weeks before my due date. I was fine with it...you know that last month is the worst! :-)

  • Most OBs will schedule after 38 weeks, but a lot of hospitals will not schedule before 39 weeks (even for twins).

Thankfully I am not delivering at one of those hospitals.

  • I was given the option to schedule anytime after 39 weeks.  I picked the day before my due date.  They moved my date up 6 days, even though my cycles are like clockwork and very short, so I'm not too concerned about going into labor on my own.
