Babies: 9 - 12 Months

9 month old whines ALL day long - pls help!

I'm starting to lose my mind... my nine month old son has been whining SO much lately, it's truly driving me crazy.  He pretty much has two modes - "walking" around holding my fingers or whining/crying.  If I put him down or even just carry him in my arms, he's whining (and eventually crying) because all he wants to do is "walk".  I know he's a baby and I totally expect to give him tons of attention, but I can't possibly spend his every waking minute walking him around.

He absolutely refuses to crawl.  He can cruise on furniture on his own, but doesn't really want to.  Aside from letting him whine or giving in and walking him, is there anything else I can do?? I walk him as much as possible, but I'd love it if he could sit and play with a toy for a couple of minutes without whining!  Any ideas?

  • I should add - he was doing much better playing independently for short periods until recently.  This new "walk or whine" thing has just been the past few weeks.  Even if I sit and play with him, he whines until I let him walk.  Also, he seems WAY worse with me than with my DH or anyone else. What gives?

  • Wow, I thought I was the only one. When my son was about your son's age, he did the same thing, except, he wanted to jump. I would stand him up for hours while he jumped and bounced the whole day. So, I marched my butt right on down to walmart and bought him a jumperoo. It was the best baby item I bought to date. He would jump in that thing for HOURS if I let him. Maybe try to get him a exersaucer or walker. Also, we carried our son in a bjorn, because he had a little separation anxiety too. Also, he may be teething, and extra clingy because he is not feeling his best. He will outgrow it. Believe ME! Now at almost two, my son can't run away from me fast enough. Hang in there moma!

  • Try some new toys and see what happens.

Also, does your LO get a lot of outside time? My LO is like addicted to outside and we're all much happier not in the house.

Otherwise, it's just a phase and a common one for that age. If LO has been fed, loved, played..let him whine as annoying and hard as it is. He'll find something else to do eventually.

  • they seem controversial now but I would recommend a walker too. We have one. I can get things done in the kitchen while my DS follows me around in it.

  • How about getting an "Around we go." Then he can walk around and play with the toys but doesn't necessarily need your assistance the whole time.

  • Earplugs??

We went through a phase like this when DS was trying to learn to crawl. Now that he's cruising a ton, I always have his walker toy nearby so he can pull himself up and just go. I also get out of the house a lot. We go for a walk before his first nap, run errands before his second nap (or go the park), we usually play outside before dinner and normally go for a walk before bath. It's busy, but DH and I are busy bodies too.

  • DD did this and is very similar to your DS.  She never crawled or even tried.  She loved to cruise, but mostly loved to walk.  She really liked her walker and we got her a push toy that she could walk around with.  That helped.  But for the moments that she just had to walk, we used the Juppy and it saved our backs a little.

DD isn't a big whiner but I firmly believe in getting out even just to walk around our yard or block (don't know what your options are where you live) and getting even 10 min of fresh air during each awake period makes helps tire her out.  SHe is also just started cruising and I let her climb the stairs repeatedly to wear her out.

Welcome to my life! DD could care less about crawling, all she wants to do is 'walk' holding our hands. She's super fast and can walk a lot (yesterday at the park, she walked around the entire park). She'll sit for a bit, but then whines and grabs your fingers to walk-its very annoying! I wish she'd just learn to walk already, its been months of this faux walking, and we're all tired!
