They're not recommended because they can block air flow and may cause SIDS.
We didn't use a bumper until DS started getting really active and getting his limbs stuck in the railings of his crib. Then we bought a breathable bumper, it keeps his arms & legs inside so he doesn't wake up screaming in panic/pain when it happens.
Some parents don't use a bumper at all - that is a personal choice made by each parent. I would recommend using a breathable one if you're going to use one at all.
They're solely decorative. And AAP now recommends against them bc of the SIDS risk. We had them with DS bc they came with the bedding set, but we're not using them this time.
I remember when this was largely discussed many, many months ago and made note to order a breathable bumper. I found mine on Amazon for $25, but I also found them at Target. They seem to be highly recommended.
I have a major bumper crush since they're so cute and really complete the crib but I didn't use them. Breathable bumpers are a great alternative if you want to keep those little limbs out of the slats.
It's totally up to you. I would make a decision based on what you think is best.
We used a breathable bumper for the first couple months until DS would somehow still get around it and bang his head on the sides of the crib. Then we ended up using a regular bumper. This was when he was old enough to move away from it if needed. That' sjust waht we did, but everyone has their own opinion on this one
Im a bad mom and had a "real" bumper for DD. I also have one for the new baby. Shame on me. Really though, I agree that you need to just decide whats best for you. Mine is out of DDs crib now because she was using it to climb on and I worried about her climbing out of her crib. Before that though it was always attached to the crib. Breathable bumpers are definitely an option though, as everyone has suggested.

I recommend a breathable one. We tried to not have one but I found DD stuck in the slats one day and felt so horrible that she had been stuck like that. She was crying and upset as she was stuck on her stomach and couldn't move. We used a breathable one the rest of the time and I have one in place for this baby as well.

We use breathable bumpers. I find that they are necessary b/c w/o them, DS would gets limbs stuck through the rails - not literally stuck to where we couldn't get them out, but he would not be able to get himself unstuck w/o help. Also when he would roll over, he'd bang his head on the rails. The breathable bumpers offer a slight cushion.
Bumpers, even the mesh ones, arent necessary at all. Not one of my kids have ever needed one, nor have I used one. I think they are great actually. My friend uses them in her babys crib and has been pleased with it. But she also keeps a small fan on in the room for circulation and uses the video monitor. It really is up to you. If I had them in a pretty set I might be tempted to use them, but I dont, and plus I kind of like to be able to see inside of the crib from the doorway as to not wake baby during naps. So really its just whatever you prefer.
My LO started using hers around 9 months and used the hell out of it until I switched her to a big girl bed just a few weeks ago. She always slept against it.
Solid investment but you don't really need it right away.
Re: dumb FTM question about bumpers
Need one? No. Regular bumpers don't allow air flow into the crib which can cause SIDS.
If you really want one, get a breathable bumper.

Not only do you not need one, the AAP recommends strongly against them.
Once DS was moving around in his crib, we used a breathable bumper so his arms, paci, etc. wouldn't stick out
