Dog moms

Where does your dog sleep? It's like some cruel joke, the baby STTN but our pooch wakes up at least once. He had been sleeping in our bed. I brought the crate into our room a few days ago, and the last few nights he's been STTN. Do you think he'll be fine if we bring him back into our bed (I like puppy cuddles), or is he going to have to sleep in the crate from now on?

Re: Dog moms

  • The best thing we ever did was start crating our dogs at night. They used to sleep in our bed but woke us up constantly. Now, they go right in and stay quiet all night.

To answer your question though, sometimes my DH lets one of them sleep with him. The dog likes to sleep under the covers by his legs... It hasn't made a difference in his night sleeping. He now stays in bed all night without getting up. And he will go back into his crate too if we want him to.

  • kleMck if I recall, from a previous siggy pic, your fur baby is a little guy. We used to bed share with our pooch but he weighs 70 pounds, so when DD arrived, pooch was kicked out of our bed and sleeps on his own dog bed in the den floor. However, if my fur baby was small like yours, I would totally still share the bed with him. We did it more for safety reasons, since some weekend mornings DD will cuddle in our bed. My dog's tail is like a whip, and he does not always have full control of the wagging.

  • We crated our dog from the beginning (golden retriever...I didn't want hair in the bed all the time) but the crate has been in our room. We don't close the door anymore but Casper knows when its bedtime, he goes into his crate.  Sometimes he'll come out and sleep on the floor, and he has been known to come upstairs with me when DS wakes in the middle of the night. As much as I wanted puppy cuddles when we got him (at 10 lbs) I'm really glad we didn't put him in the bed b/c he takes up a lot more room now!  DH and I are both restless sleepers, so I think we would have kept him awake more (and vice versa) if we had put him in the bed with us.

  • Jlo - yes, he's a lightweight, at about 10 lbs. He likes to sleep with his head on our pillows, body under the covers, or snuggled up by our shoulders with his head on our necks. He doesn't shed, so we don't have a problem with hair in the bed (unless you count mine :-/), and he avoids DD recently, since she's taken an interest in sliming him every opportunity she gets.

I guess we'll try to move him back to the bed next week to see if he's figured it out. I'm leaving the crate in the room, though, in case that needs to be permanent.

  • Gah. Yes. Aria is a champ at STTN... but the last 2 nights, our 6 year old Shih-tzu, Sophie, has started barking at least 3 times in the motn. She's been crated at night for the entire 4 years we've had her. We moved her to the kitchen about a year ago, because her "room" is now the baby's room, and we didn't want her to associate the baby coming home with her being moved.

I don't know what the problem is. Maybe it's the fact that tonight is the full moon, and it's so bright that she thinks it's time to get up? Regardless, I've had to resort to spanking her (just a swat on the bum) to get her to stop. She's waking everyone up. I love her, but I want to strangle her furry little neck sometimes.

  • We have an 80lb lab that used to sleep in our bed at night. Since we had Colton, the dog has been sleeping on his own bed (which was always there next to our bed, just never used) on his own. I wouldn't mind if he climbed into bed with us, but he just prefers his own now. It's weird.

  • Oliver has a crate in our room.  Before the baby, he would sleep in his crate during the week and in our bed on weekends.  Since the baby has come, he sleeps in our bed.  It's his consolation for having to share our love and attention with his new little sister (whom he loves and is so good with, for the record) We never bed-shared with Mia, and on the occasion that she naps in our bed with us on weekend mornings, he is usually on the floor by then.

  • Holly sleeps at the foot of the bed with us. Usually she sleeps between my husband's feet so gets the raw end of the deal.

  • Molly our Saint (110 lbs) wont sleep in the bed, she use to but now she wont even get on the bed since we got a new higher bed she doesnt like to jump up there, she sleeps next to the baby's bed.

Milo our German Shepard mix (60lbs) will get on the bed as we lay down but as soon as we start to fall asleep he jumps down and lays on DH's side of the bed. Baby and Molly are on my side.

Neither one of them get up at night, they follow me into the livingroom when I get up with baby. They go crazy as soon as my alarm goes off wanting to go out.

  • This will sound funny, but our dog sleeps in the closet in our bedroom.  He is a HUGE wuss, and he used to sleep under our bed, but we got a new bed that is lower to the ground.  He has a very nice (and expensive!) dog bed, but he mostly refuses to sleep in it and prefers the closet.  He will scratch at it if we close it.

FYI...he is a very neurotic border collie/Australian Shepard mix.

Elmer totally used to do this! DH had really expensive memory foam pillows, and I just couldn't stand mine. I got a new pillow and put the old one on the floor of the closet, and Elmer thought it was for him.

We can't let him sleep on the ground, though. If we're not quick to take him outside when he has to go to the bathroom, he'll pee on the floor. When he jumps off the bed, I usually hear his collar and it wakes me up. Without that, though, I sleep right through any whining and then I've got a mess to clean up in the morning.
