Anyone else hate buying maternity clothes?

I HATE buying maternity clothes and haven't bought anything yet.  I keep checking all sorts of different stores and cannot find anything I like.  I was given a few dresses from my sister, but besides that I just can't get in the mood to buy any.  I am shopping, but when I buy shirts, I try to find regular ones that would work as well. For now it's working for me since I'm not showing that much yet, but I know there is going to come a point where I'll need to suck it up and just buy stuff.  Just wondering if I am the only one having a hard time with buying maternity stuff.

Re: Anyone else hate buying maternity clothes?

  • I have the opposite problem. I have to fight not to buy things because I have plenty of stuff from my first pregnancy and things others gave to me when they were done. I tend to think that maternity clothing looks a lot better on pregnant women than regular clothing just because it accentuates the bump. It does suck to spend money on something you will only wear for a short time, but if you have more kids and save the stuff you get your money out of it.

  • I also hate it. I'm kind of a jeans snob, so I've had the toughest time with jeans. I know there are 7's maternity jeans out there, but this may be my only pregnancy, so I can't let myself spend that much. Old Navy/kohls/etc jeans just aren't for me. Plus I'm tall so I can't buy pants just anywhere. And just this week I thought I might be done buying stuff (with the exception of the perfect jean) and I remembered I have an October wedding and nothing to wear to it. :(

  • I bought a few dresses for the summer earlier in June. I was procrastinating buying clothes for the fall. I knew I would need work clothes, and a few casual outfits. I just hate buying such expensive clothes when I am only going to wear them until the end of October or beginning of November (whenever our little one decides to make her appearance). Luckily I am visiting my parents out of town, and my step mom gave me some money to buy work clothes this week. I got 6 shirts from the motherhood store (they are OK). I also got a few pairs of jeans and t-shirts from H&M. It was easier to shop when it wasn't my money. lol. A friend from work/church gave me 3 pairs of work pants that fit perfectly! So I don't think I am going to buy anything else if I can help it. Hopefully what I have gotten so far lasts until the end. I don't want to look at another maternity store for another few years!! haha.

  • I love having clothes that fit properly!!! I also hope to be able to share my maternity clothes with my friends when they get pregnant, so it is an investment for us all! I do wish that maternity clothes were not SO expensive!! They rarely have a good sale, which is a bummer for me. I always buy things on sale!

  • Me!! This is my FWP of the month.  I just hate spending money on stuff I don't even really like.  And now all the cute fall clothes are coming out and I can't get any of them... Sad

  • For a few reasons I HATE shopping for Maternity Clothes.

    1. I hate spending so much on clothes that I will only wear for a little while.

    2. Majority of the stuff out there will either fit my belly and not my legs or the just the opposite. Fits legs, not belly.

    3.  I hate majority of the styles. I find myself buying more "regular" people shirts at Marshalls that have a higher waist.

     4. The Motherhood store around me has older women working there and I always get a hairy eyeball because I look a bit younger than I am. I always get attacked by sales people and just get anxious and want to leave asap.

Luckily, we aren't going to be pregnant forever! Hope you find some good Maternity Clothes soon, as I will say that the pants can be very comfy :)

Exactly!  I have found some cute stuff at H&M and Asos, but other than that.. blah!  I've been doing a lot of neutrals with fun accessories and cute handbags.

  • I HATE spending the MONEY on maternity clothes- but I love shopping for them Smile

  • I haven't bought any maternity clothes yet. I'm procrastinating. I'm plus size prior to pregnancy and haven't seen any plus size maternity that thrills me. I think i'll just end up buying larger plus size non maternity clothing and maybe get one of those maternity belly bands to wear under my shirts.

  • I'm right there with you- I actually went yesterday and I was miserable. I ended up buying make-up instead, haha! I am usually a very stylish person and love to be trendy, and most of the maternity stores I go to have very little for me. And I'd rather not spend a fortune because I'll wear them for such a short amount of time. SO what I do is just try to buy more flowy tops, I have only gotten bigger in my stomach area, so most things still fit (with exception of pants/shorts). But I am right there with you!

  • I'm the opposite! I DID agree for a while.. I didn't want to spend money on stuff I could only wear for a few months, if that.. but then I found a bunch of stuff that I can wear after baby comes.. assuming I don't get all super skinny.. cuz that'd be terrible..
(bahaha.. yeahh right.. Wink) If that happens, I'll donate!

Don't get me wrong, I still hate how expensive most of the maternity clothes is but if you get a good sale I'm sure you'll find stuff you don't mind buying. Between the comfort of full panel pants and properly fitting shirts.. and finding styles that'll work now and after.. it's well worth it!! (for me anyway!)
I got some empire waist tops and other tops that are super stretchy so that they will wear well after baby.. and some maternity capris and a pair of maternity yoga pants. They actually fit my body better than regulay clothes, I think. I'm more butt and hips than anything so waist tends to be too big on reg jeans/pants. The stretchy panel is AMAZING! And YES I fully intend to wear my maternity clothes well after baby.. haha.. they're too comfy not to! Who needs to know?

  • I think I hate buying them because they don't fit well. I was coerced into buying maternity jeans in a medium. I've never been a medium in anything my whole life. My DH called me his XL girl for awhile before I lost some weight before this pregnancy. But I had a 14 and a 16 from Target that I bought at consignment store and they didn't fit. The 16 too big and the 14 was so tight in the legs that it was fall down reminiscent of ghetto show your underwear style pants. So I was desperate to find a pair that fit for my trips to Santiago where it is cold!  Well, MM coerced me into a medium and I wore them once and now they don't fit. My fat legs are too big ala the 14s. I'm giving up on mat jeans. I ordered some leggings from the gap and I am pinning all hope on them. I so hope that they fit or that this Florida summer lasts until the baby decides to come. I love my mat dresses. All the other stuff has been a waste of money. I should try to consign it out now. I know I'm not going to wear it if those leggings don't fit. I've gained so much weight. I refuse to buy any more stuff. I just grow right out of it. Dresses are the way to go. My fat butt and thighs just won't cooperate with shorts and pants right now.

  • imagerdmitten:

I just hate maternity clothes. No matter if they're the cheaper Motherhood or more expensive designer brands that Pea carries, I hate them.

So, to make myself feel better about the bland side-runched shirts I have to wear, I accessorize with awesome shoes :)

I cannot wait to be back in my regular clothes. I miss them so much!

This exactly. I'm not worried about spending the money...I just can't find anything that I even like.

  • I hate to spend $ on clothes period, so it is especially hard for me to shell out for maternity clothes.  Fortunately, a friend loaned me a bunch of her clothes, they're cute, and I'm so glad to have them.  I also found 3 shirts at a 2nd hand store that I probably wouldn't have purchased at a retail store, but was happy to spend $3 each for these.  I feel much better in maternity clothes that fit than trying to stretch my pre-maternity clothes.

I also am feeling much better about the way that I look after trying to fit my huge boobs into my same-size bras.  I hate to spend money on stuff that I may not wear much, but at least I'm not miserable when I leave each morning any longer.

Meant to put in a bit about buying some bras that actually fit - guess I got ahead of myself :/.

  • If you're hesitant to buy maternity clothing, I would definitely recommend buying a bellaband or two.  I am still able to wear some of my pre-maternity jeans and skirts at six months pregnant thanks to that thing...plus it's on sale right now: https://www.ingridandisabel.com/product/1111/bellaband-everyday.html. I bought shirts once I hit 3-4 months though because I just don't think that larger regular sized t-shirts look as good as maternity shirts.  Maternity shirts are cut to flatter the belly, so I just think it looks better, while I found that regular sizes just kind of made me look large in all the wrong places.

And as for maternity clothing being really expensive, I hate spending a lot of money on clothes.  That's why I have been going to secondhand stores like Goodwill and Salvation Army.  I've scored great Motherhood jeans, Gap maternity shirts, and really cute dresses for a fraction of the price.  Some of them even had the original tags on them!  I just wash everything before I wear it and it looks as good as new!

    Good luck!

  • I hear ya. The maternity clothes are so ugly, unless you spend ALOT of money.

I am wearing a swimsuit cover-up and maternity leggings today. And I got tons of compliments (while I was in Beverly Hills no less). As long as you feel good I guess...

  • I am the opposite.  I love destination maternity and have scooped up tons of stuff from both the pea in the pod and motherhood lines.  Once I started shopping and wearing the clothes I realized how much more comfortable and flattering they were.
  • I am completely with you!  I keep going into the store thinking THIS time I'll buy something -- then leaving a few minutes later.  The only way I've bought anything is when forced by a friend or relative who marches me into the store and tells me what to get.  I recommend this.

I can't even tell if something looks good because to me it all looks awful.  And I feel all of my regular clothes giving me sad eyes from the closet, silently asking, "Will we ever get to come out and play again?"

I wish I could motivate to accessorize with great shoes!  I feel like I've just given up on looking the way I'd like until I can fit back into my civilian clothes again.

  • I pretty much refuse to buy maternity clothes. The maternity clothes are sooo expensive compared to what I usually spend on clothes and I haven't found anything I actually like enough to pay the price. My family keeps pointing out how tight my tshirts are now and saying "Why don't you go buy some clothes that fit?"  Because I don't want to. You go buy clothes that fit me, if it bothers you so much. I stay at home pretty much all the time anyway or just go to my mom's or granny's. I do break out the few things I have in maternity if I go somewhere where I like to look nice. Like the doctor. Or a restaurant.
