Filling while pregnant??

Hey Ladies-

I need a filling done at the dentist- is that safe while pregnant? (No x-rays needed) I also need a crown but I've decided to get that done POST-BABY. Any thoughts?

Re: Filling while pregnant??

  • I'm no doctor but I'm not sure why it wouldn't be safe. I know you're actually encouraged to see the dentist while pregnant, and I'm also guessing as long as your dentist knows you're pregnant, they have a good idea of what they should and should not do during a pregnancy.

I'd say you're probably fine! All that really is is taking away tooth, no shots or anything. Smile

  • I know I need a couple fillings right now and both my dentist and OB have given the okay. I haven't gotten around to it yet though bc I'm waiting on something from insurance. Plus I hate getting fillings.

  • I had one filled at 11 weeks and my OB was ok with it. Just said for them to only use local. I'm supposed to have another one here in a few weeks.

  • it is absolutely fine.  2nd tri is the recommended time for dental work.

it is actually safer for your and baby's health to get dental work attended to when needed rather than wait for months until the birth.  just be sure to tell your dentist you are pregnant, and use only local anesthesia.

  • I had 2 fillings around 20 weeks with no problems, but I didn't have any anesthetics. Some dentists don't like to do it in the third try so you should get it done soon.

  • My husband is a dentist and he filled a cavity on me a few weeks ago. The pain meds are a local anesthetic, so it's totally safe.

  • My husband did suggest we go med free for the filling to test out my pain tolerance for my natural planned birth. I declined that offer. ;)

  • My dentist would not give me a simple filling last time i was pregnant. I'm not sure why but i trusted him and plus it wasn't big enough that it couldn't wait.

  • My doctor told me when I first went in that having healthy teeth is important for the baby. She said if you were putting anything off at the dentist that now would be the time to do it. At like 14 weeks I had a tooth pulled, it sucked but I was putting it off. So getting a filling would be fine I'm sure :)

I am not sure why you are emphasizing only local anesthetic, my understanding is that non-chronic exposure to nitrous oxide is quite safe during 2nd tri, and for that matter is sometimes used during child birth.

OP, I did get a crown done during pregnancy and my dentist was so nervous about my pregnancy that he gave me a reduced dose of novocaine. Ouch.

  • A composite (tooth-colored) filling is fine.  I wouldn't get an amalgam (the mercury is leaked into your system the most in the first 24 hours after placement).

Make sure your dentist knows you're pregnant and not to use certain anesthetics, otherwise you're fine.

  • I had a root canal 2 weeks ago and am getting a crown tomorrow.

My dentist and endodontist contacted my OB to clear with him that there was no reason to hold off and to get the meds approved. My OB did not approve laughing gas, but the local anesthetics were no problem.

And I had several xrays done. They had special lead smocks for pregnancy (covered me front and back) and put a 2nd regular one over my belly too. Maybe overkill, but made me feel better.

  • I had to get some fillings during this pg.  Appt was booked before I knew I was expecting.  Called the dentist when I got my BFP to see if it was ok to have them done then (5w).  He had me come in and checked to see if it was an emergency type thing (he didn't suggest the work, he partner did, but I booked with him because I prefer he do all my work).  Being that it wasn't a rush, he had me rebook for 2nd tri.  According to my dentist, there is no proof that basic dental work can jeoprodize a pg in any way, but he always puts off anything he can til second tri when the baby is developed and just at the growing stage.  That said, I had 2 fillings done at 13w and have had no side effects and my baby looks perfect on u/s.
