Adoption

Another international adoption Q - Russia?

Hi, my home board is IF Veterans but I will probably be posting over here as well as we start thinking about adoption. Right now I am deciding between DA and IA, specifically Russia. What I like about IA is the 'logical'-ness of it, like some posters said in the post a couple down from this one - you do your work and then get in line. What I like about Russia is the short referral time (I have been waiting so long already to become a mom), and also that we would have a child of the same race (Caucasian). I'm not really considering transracial adoption at this point. What I don't like about Russia is that it's crazy expensive. I've also heard about the recent changes in Russian adoption law and not sure how that's going to affect things.

(DH is more interested in DA - so am I, but I'm nervous about the uncertain wait times, having to be "chosen," BM changing her mind, etc. So we're exploring both right now)

Is anyone adopting from Russia? Why did you pick it and what has been your experience? Are you concerned about the recent legal/political issues?

Re: Another international adoption Q - Russia?

  • We are adopting from Russia! Posting from my phone so I will write more later but I am detailing our journey in my blot. The political issues delayed our adoption by 2 months but are not currently a. Issue; everything is resolving. Aldo our agency had s great fee schedule : 35 000$ for our adoption. Much better than the 50 000$ I read elsewhere. Welcome to the board!

TTC September 2010 thru October 2011

DH and I have talked about adopting from Russia. Nothing is set in stone, as he is not 100% sure he wants to adopt. If we do, it will be from Russia. A big part of our reason is because DH was adopted from Russia. We would like to be able to adopt from the same town, if possible.

As any time there would be legal/political issues, there would be some concern, but we'll just have to see what all is going on or will go on when we start the process.

  • I'm also going the IA route, specifically with Russia. If anyone wants info about my experiences or agency, let me know.

  • We adopted DS from Russia almost exactly three years ago. He was 26 months when we brought him home and in a few weeks will enter kindergarten.

We adopted from Russia because we wanted a sort of definite time frame.  We also wanted a child of the same race.  I'm not up on the current situation so can't comment.  With us, we had a referral within 3-4 months and were home with DS within 6 months of the referral.

The last three years have been extremely challenging and difficult, mainly due to  behavior issues.  Physically he is great, has never been sick.  Cognitively he is right on target and picked up the language very quickly.  Although we have made a lot of progress with the behavior, it has been a lot of work.  I highly recommend reading about brain development and about early experiences.
