It's Official- TTTS in di/di twins

I had posted here awhile back about a huge weight difference out of no where with my di/di boy/girl twins. They were measuring very close the whole time till about 30 weeks. Our girl started dropping & our boy got huge. We were told not to worry since they were di/di however the more extreme it got they admitted that it can happen in rare cases.

Finally we had to have a c-section where they were 4.3lbs apart. When they were born their placentas had fused together & hers was much smaller as was her cord. His cord was huge since he was taking from hers as well.

I am thankful that they closely monitored her & as soon as her cord blood supply slowed they went in & got her that day.

  • Wow that's really interesting!  I have actually heard of it occuring in di/di twins but it's so rare.  I think a TTTS FB group I am part of there is one in thousands that had di/di TTTS.  So glad they got them out in time!  How did they end up diagnosing it?  Also, how's everyone doing?

  • I am so glad they caught it! My di/di twins were close to developing TTTS; all along they were literally 1 oz apart, and then at birth they were 8 oz apart, fused placentas, and my daughter's cord was bigger than my son's. But because they were 38 weeks and the difference was less than 20%, they were not concerned. How big were your twins at birth?

  • They are doing great! Taking it slow but going out of the Level 3 NICU to the Level 2 tonight.

Our girl has passed our boy at every milestone. Eating, breathing, got off oxygen, got of IV, etc.  They say that this happens with the stressed twin. They are more motivated. He was fat & lazy! Stick out tongue He didnt want to do any work. He will be realeased before her just because of size. But she can hold her own.

    Emerson was 3.3lbs & Walker was 7.6lbs. 4.3lbs difference.

  • That is so crazy! So glad to hear they're doing so well - I can't believe how long it took for  them to figure it all out considering the size discrepancy. Amazing!

  • Hum... I find this intriguing.  I wonder if I might have been in the same boat.  Two of the girls had fused placentas.  They all measured around the same - then bang around 30 weeks the biggest one took off and baby A didn't grow any more.  C grew at a normal rate.  So I delivered 33.6 and their weights were

    A - 3.12 (hadn't grown in 3 weeks) - Fused with B

B - 5.5 (was close then started to pack it on) - Fused with A

C - 4.4 (on her own and grew at a steady rate)

    Cool!

  • Truly Amazing. 4.3 Pounds Apart?! The group mrs. Alice mentions is TTTS Hope & Connections on Facebook, where we would love to invite you to come tell your story. We have a mom who sadly lost one of her Frat Pair to Twin Anemia Polycythemia Sequence TAPS. Your case sounds very much more like Standard Twin Oligo-Polyhydramnios Sequence TOPS or "Just Plain Old TTTS". Was Pathology done on the Fused Placental Mass? Congratulations on your Double Survival! https://www.facebook.com/groups/203496653079054/ Stop On By & say hi.
  • I too had didi twins with TTTS, the TAPS version.

My boys were born at 35 weeks, Grady needed an immediate blood transfusion! He had less than 1/3 of the normal amount of blood in his body. Cullen had the rest of the blood plus his own. Cullen died 5 hrs later from mainly lung hemmhoraging.
