S/O Pertussis

It is totally freaking me out!  We have had an outbreak in our area and I found out someone at my baby shower had whooping cough!! Yikes!

Did you/Will you get a TDaP booster while pregnant or did you get it shortly after?  Did you ask family and friends to get it before being around your babies?  This has been discussed quite a bit on my BMB but just curious to hear your opinions!

Re: S/O Pertussis

  • We talked to our doctor about this at our last prenatal visit.  She highly suggested that anyone that will be around the babies a significant period of time get a booster.  She told me that I cannot get it until after the babies are born and so that is when I will be getting mine.  I have asked my mom and step dad to get it since we will be staying with them while waiting to move in to a new house after the boys are born.

  • So, I just asked my OB yesterday about that. This was her response, "You absolutely DO NOT get it while you are pregnant." She will give it to me as soon as the baby is born.  Then, my own antibodies will transfer to the babies and will help defend them against it until they get it at 2 months. We can, however, get the flu shot pregnant and she recommended that because the baby can have that in their system and that will protect them for a year, until they get it at their annual!

I have asked my family (parents, sister, and her fiance) to get the whooping cough vac and they all said they will, without a problem! And when I talked about it with friend recently 2 volunteered to get it and one already did get it. I am only 12 weeks!  I have good friends! =D

What I tell them, is this is becoming an epidemic and is spreading rapidly b/c most adults vacs are no longer effective, it's been too long since they've gotten them. It's a good idea for them too because there were almost 600K cases of adults with it last year, about 3400 babies, of about 100 deaths!  It's a big deal!

My friend (and next door neighbor that we see frequently) doesn't get shots and refuses to vaccinate her children. That terrifies me and I don't want my kids hanging out with them for the first year. By 1, they will have all their vacs and then it's her kids that will be in danger, not mine!

  • I wasn't asking my friends to get it, they volunteered! Just to be clear!

  • DH is going to get his combo booster in the next few weeks, because he hasn't had any since childhood.

I have to check with my GP because I was given a tetanus booster two years ago, and I am not entirely sure whether it was a stand alone T booster, or the combo.

The girls are up to date, and will be required to wash up every time they get home from school or childcare or whatnot.

  • Interesting!  Thanks for the feedback everyone! A lot of the ladies on my BMB are pretty adamant about getting it in the third tri and I was hoping to hold off until after the babies are born.  But I second guessed myself when I read about Selenamarinos poor babies today!  Especially with all the other ladies so gung-ho about getting it asap.  I put a call in to my OB's nurse line, I'll be curious to see what their take on it is.

  • Please let us know what they say, bc i would like to know if they think it's okay!  For some reason, my doc was very against it while I am pg.  But, i guess everyone has their own opinion!

  • Will definitely update when I hear back from them (it always takes forever!) I wonder if they will answer the phone when I'm in labor?  ;)

  • I got it last year a day after having DD. DH will be getting it next week. We've spoken to our close family and will be firm about no frequent visits unless you are up to date. Luckily, they all understand and are either up to date or all be soon.
  • I got mine before I left the hospital when my babies were born. DH got it shortly after. All of the grandparents and the nanny also got it. The vaccine, I mean, not whooping cough.

  • GP got back to me, and I did have the full Tdap booster in 2010, not just a stand alone, so I'm good to go. DH will still need his, but otherwise, the whole family is up to date.

Yes  That's awesome!  Wishing I would have had mine done in 2010!! :) The information/opinions on it are so conflicting!

Heard back from my OB's office and they also said that they would not give it during pregnancy and it would be offered to me after the birth at the hospital.  Geeze I want to pass this on to my BMB because those ladies were telling everyone and their mom to go get it immediately!  Yikes!  Thanks again for the input everyone!

  • We both got the booster (me after delivery) and at my pedi, OB and delivering hospital's request we asked everyone who met the babies to get the booster as well.  We had a pretty major outbreak right around the time they were born.  We don't live near family though, so we didn't have people just dropping in.  They were all scheduled visits.

  • I'm getting it while PG... I was supposed to get it today actually but my office ran out so I'll get it next appt.

Why are people being told to avoid it while PG?  Curious....

  • I got mine right after I gave birth.  I never had anyone else get it... I didn't know it was an issue until later.  But now that they have had their 2 mo vaccines are we ok?  I know it is spreading as an epidemic because of the fact that there are people that are not vaccinating their kids.  Scary.

  • The vaccine is NOT a live/weakened vaccine so my inclination (as a pharmacist) is that it should be safe during pregnancy. To be absolutely sure, I double checked the CDC recommendation and they currently recommend it given after 20 weeks gestation. Also realizing that it takes 2 weeks for it to be fully effective. https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/pertussis/tdap-pregnancy-hcp.htm

  • I got mine in the hospital when I delivered, my mom got one while I was pregnant.  I kept meaning to get it while I was pregnant and ended up on bed rest so I was going out in public anyways.

  • My OB's office doesn't give it, but they said I could go to get it at Walgreens.  Otherwise, I will get it in the hospital after the babies are born.  DH has to call his dr and get it, I just reminded him again.  My mom already called her dr about it and she and my dad have an appt. at the end of the month.  I am not sure if my dad can get it though b/c of his health problems, but if he can, he will.  My aunt has also said that she plans to get it.  DH hasn't talked to his parents yet, but I have told him he has to.  Getting him to call them is like pulling teeth sometimes!!

I am debating who else I should ask to get it?  When they say if the person is going to be a frequent visitor are they talking weekly?  Daily?  I assume they don't mean monthly. I am most concerned about co-workers that may want to come visit as I work at a middle school and things go around like crazy.  Obviously, they won't come often, so I can't really expect them to get it.

  • I asked my MFM about whether I should get it now or wait til the babies are born and I am in the hospital.  She was very clear about getting it during pregnancy and told me they strongly encourage moms to be to get it before delivering. We also asked all the grandparents to get the vaccine and they were happily on board.  I am a little nervous about having to tell others that "no vaccines means no visits" but I am sure the protective mama in me will come out when the time comes.

  • I got the shot in the hospital. DH had already had it. We asked anyone that planned to spend time with the babies to get it. If someone was just coming for a visit to meet them, we didn't ask them to get it but my parents, MIL, SIL, siblings, and grandma all got it.

  • My OB gives it in pregnancy as long as you are 20+ weeks. It will take ~2 weeks after the injection to build immunity. DH got his before the babies came and i got mine on the postpartum unit. We only allowed our immediate family to visit for the first month. I sent out an email to our immediate families with info on the vaccine...my whole family (parents, sister, aunt, grandma) got the vaccine...but no in laws. DH's cousin is pregnant and due in December, so now I've been telling her how important it is...I'm hoping that will motivate the in-laws to get vaccinated.

I honestly don't know because I also heard it was safe in the late 2nd/3rd tri and it seems like the majority of my BMB was told to get it/has gotten it while pg.  I guess since there are so many different opinions I'm just going to go with my OB's recommendation to have it done at the hospital after the births and cross my fingers that everything is ok for those two weeks it takes to kick in. I'm definitely having DH get his soon though!
