3rd Trimester

is it okay to be in a newly painted room?

my sweet DH painted the whole bedroom/nursery by himself because i didn't want to be around the fumes (bless his heart). anyways, it barely smells in there and he opened the window and had the fan going the entire time. now that the paint is almost dry, it's time to clean up and i promised him i'd help him with that since i couldn't paint. is it okay for me to go in there? i don't want to do anything harmful to my or DD's body. i know i may sound paranoid, but i'd rather be safe than sorry! thanks for the advice guys.

  • You are fine. You would have been fine to paint as well. If it starts to bother you, take a break and get some fresh air. I actually work part-time in a paint department. The only type of paint I would not be around is oil-based paints. Most latex paints are going to zero VOC's and low odor. I'm thinking about repainting DS's room.

  • we used behr interior primer and paint all-in-one. not sure what kind of paint that is. the lady at home depot did mention it was VOC free, but i thought the pigment they put to mix the paint had VOCs...

  • I painted our nursery when I was pg with DS, and just painted DS's big boy room last week, almost entirely by myself.  Just take breaks to get fresh air if you start to feel lightheaded or get a headache.

You should definately be fine then. The zero VOC paint smells more so than our pigments we put into the paint. Any paint with soap and water cleanup (you can rinse your brush with water to get the paint off) is latex or water based. If you have to use a chemical to get it off, such as mineral spirits, it's oil-based. Yours is latex, so it's fine to be around.

  • We're painting our bedroom tonight...do you think it's okay to sleep in there with windows open and a fan, just a few hours after painting? (Low VOC paint, as well).

It's probably okay, but I wouldn't take the chance. We camped out in the living room until the paint was completely dry and the smell about gone.

  • Low VOC is fine to sleep in the room, it is the new "go green" line VERY little odor. I never noticed a odor with that line. And your paint will be dry in less then 30min! When they says wait a couple of hours for it to dry that is false, it dries FAST! Depending on humidity, it can be dry in less then 30min. Turn on the fan,let it dry to the touch, decorate and Go sleep in your room tonight, you are fine!
