Pre-School and Daycare

Preschool and daycare are bankrupting us!

I know this isn't anything new, but we are really struggling with the cost of daycare and preschool for our two kids. I just wonder how we all manage to do this! We spent $1600 a month right now for our two little ones, and that's for 6 hours of care each day.

We can't be the only ones struggling with this, are we?

  • Ha ha, you're definitely not alone! We have one more year until the boys start kindergarten. There's still aftercare and summer camp, but still...

And we're lucky that it's relatively cheap here (we pay a lot less than you for all three) but still - I feel like I should have been RICH before I had kids. How was I not? :)

DS starts private Pre-K this year.  When he starts Kindergarten next year, the price will be even more.  I can't even begin to imagine the cost for two kids in private school.  People ask, are you going to have another child?  I think to myself "Are you going to pay for it?" :-)))

  • I'm in high COL area so monthly bill for two is about 3,300. Yes, way more than mortgage. Luckily, because of our jobs this doesn't break the bank but it's definitely the reason why I'm waiting for DS1 to be in school before going for #3.

  • I can't imagine paying that much but I stay home with the kids so we don't have to pay for Daycare. DS is in a private Christian preschool but it's only $200 a month! Summer program was a bit more but after this year he moves on to Kindergarten and DD wont start until she is 3 so we have a little bit of a break.

  • I can't imagine having preschool/daycare bills that high, that blows me away!

We spend $425 a month on three days a week for preschool, ten hour days. We live in a big city and there are daycare centers downtown that were $1,500 a MONTH for the same amount of hours we're getting at our preschool. Ridiculous.

  • That sounds like about how much we paid when DD1 was in 4K and DD2 was an infant. 4K was free (public school) but daycare before and after school was considered full time. DD2 was full time though, about 9-10 hrs/day. Before/after school care in kindergarten saved us about $350-400/month.

  • Good childcare is not cheap, but perhaps it is time to look around ?

Our Catholic daycare is cheaper than what we were paying for at-home daycare. It is a bit out of the way, but we are very happy with the school itself. Considering how good our zoned public school is and it's location, our choices are to move or to do private school.

Shop around, look for smaller schools

  • Nope. That is why DD is not going to stay at her daycare in the fall of 2013, we will be putting her into FREE public 4K. And we cobble together help with DS any way we can - the grandparents help out a few times per week, as there is no way I could afford to work if I had to pay the daycare fees full time for 2 kids.

  • Well...if it makes you feel any better, in September we will be sending our 2 girls and it will cost us around $1500 a month, for TWO DAYS a week! Yes, 2 days. It sucks!!! I am not looking forward to that bill!

  • Thats about how much I would be paying if I had 2 but I only have 1 and had to switch b/c of prices.

Right now we only pay DC but last week was our first pre-k monthly payment, so we are struggling too until DC stops and pre-k starts end of minth.

  • We pay my mom (who quit her job to watch our little ones) $600/month and will pay $125 additional next month when DD starts preschool.   And yes it hard!  Our income ratio to bills is crazy.  I've been looking into coming up with a "million-dollar idea".  Still working on that plan though.
  • (sigh)...I hear you. I am really looking forward to Quentin starting Kindergarten.

  • Just had a panic attack program switch when i did the math and saw that DS + DD would equal $2275 a month, if i sent DS to the public preK ( it is tuition based at the public school) that is 1175, DD will take DS day care slot and that is 1100 a month, my base pay is 1600 net ( before commision but one bad month and we're screwed) so umm yeah we just ate the deposit we paid ealier this year for the public option and are scraping together the new school deposit and tuition. Good Times.
