This is a post about babies, not bigotry

So, I know I've been all "I don't rock Thad to sleep" because I hadn't needed to.  DH always does and that is fine with me.  I just don't like to rock.  But, right now it is taking me 30 minutes to get him to sleep for a 25 minute nap.  Rocking doesn't work, drowsy but awake doesn't work, bouncing doesn't work.  I'm at my wits end.  I am not a patient person and having a baby hasn't magically stopped that trait.  Every minute I rock and he doesn't start to close his eyes, my tension level goes up.  When I put him down in his bed and his little eyes pop open and he starts to cry, I start to feel sort of crazy.  Especially when I know that I'll have to repeat this whole routine a dozen times.

This is really only a nap time problem, nighttime isn't an issue.  I used to just let him fall asleep wherever he was (floor, bouncer, swing) but he has started Really. Loud. Talk/screeching and won't let me do that anymore.

I guess this is a vent.  But if anyone has advice on how to make going to sleep happen faster or how to change my personality, I would appreciate it.

  • Ugh whenever we think something works they change it on us.  Recently they like being held vertically, with a patpatpatpatpat rubrubrub patpatpatpatpat rubrubrub.  The patting is done quickly.

Also white noise.  They associate it with sleep now and so it helps calm them down.

  • Do you have a swing? My baby naps in one daily and loves it. Sometimes she will wake up after sleeping 30 minutes, whine for less than a minute and then is rocked back to sleep again. May want to try one to save your sanity. Good luck.

*edit- sorry... just re-read your post

We definitely have a swing and sometimes he will nap in it.  But that is only once he has gotten to "Holy sheetballs, I'm so tired my eyes are rolling around my head" stage.

  • This has nothing to do with your post, but I got so excited that you have the Ikea broccoli and carrot!  We have them too. We use the broccoli as the comparison for LO's weekly pics.

Sorry to be a dork, but I had to share :)

  • This has been happening to me lately.  Hank was such a good sleeper then suddenly major problems getting him down (35 mins of rocking, and shushing in complete darkness with a white noise machine, only to have him wail two minutes later). Then I realized I needed to shake it off,  loosen up my shoulders and recognize that he's just not ready for his nap (despite an excellent schedule he normally has himself on).   Tonight he stayed up way past his normal nap time because he just wasn't tired.  Sure, I could have fought him on it for 35 mins again, or we could spend that 35 mins playing and snuggling until he is REALLY ready for it.
