My husband and I are thinking about trying for our second kid in the next six months. We don't want our LOs to be more than 3 years apart, and LO will be 2 in December However, a few months ago I quit my fulltime job to stay with LO and work part-time from home. We lost our insurance (which was through my job) and our currently covered under a 6-month plan. Has anyone attempted child #2 without insurance?
I will likely have to have another C-section. Also, I looked at some insurance plans and couldn't find any that included labor and delivery in the coverage. Anyone want to recommend their provider?
Thanks for any help you can give!!!!
Re: Help! Insurance & no. 2
I don't have insurance through my work but through a self funded plan and you can get maternity coverage as a "add on" but labor isn't covered till 18 months after the plan starts.
If you could just start and stop coverage for things they need why wouldn't everyone do that. So getting prego before having coverage not a good idea and doubtful you will even be covered for the labor.
Personally, I would not feel comfortable getting pg w/o insurance.
NJ has a plan called NJ Family Care that provides affordable coverage for low income families. You have to apply for it & have certain criteria to get it.
Maybe your state has something similar.
Also maybe look into Aflac or other supplemental insurance company. I have a their STD coverage that pays out on top of what I get from my state's STD & FLI. You need to have the policy for like 10 or 12 months though first b/c filing a claim.
We are all covered with my husbands plan, but after the triplets...of course, I found out about Aflac. It is not as great as having insurance, but they do pay you for a couple appointments, hospital time for you and/or baby and CS or vag birth. Amounts all depending on the plan you pick. There is a waiting period though, I think you have to have it 12 months before birth, so you would need to get it 3 months before getting pregnant. Maybe check into it. I got about $4000 for Jericho's birth, but it was totally average. I have a triplet friend who was on it for her trio, bedrest, NICU etc. and she got about $70K. It can be very helpful. Good luck.
Florida also has an affordable coverage plan like that. It might be good to look into state-sponsored options if you can't afford a regular plan.
I am not judging because I know every family has to make tough decisions about finances sometimes, but having grown up without medical insurance (which meant we often went without care), I feel very strongly that I wouldn't personally choose to raise a child without insurance coverage. Sh!t happens and a single ER visit can easily get into the thousands, not to mention the cost if something truly catastrophic happened. I would definitely look into all the options before making any decisions.
Good luck!
