Anyone thinking of a new job after maternity leave?

I am currently a state employee, and I am thinking of trying to transfer elsewhere within the state after LO is born. My job now is okay, but I also did it as a college intern (it requires no higher education, which I have a BA, MA, and am working on another MA). When I moved back here from Ohio after 4 years, it was easy to get my foot in the door with the state because the people here remembered me and helped me get in. But soon, I will have enough tenure to apply for internal postings and transfer, and I've seen some good ones out there that look like much better opportunities... I'm thinking of applying for some positions starting in late October (the state is sloooooooww with the application/interviewing/hiring process). I'm not going to kill myself with applying and interviewing, but I'd like to see what's out there and hopefully do a couple of interviews while I'm on maternity leave. With the state, I'm thinking there might be some good opportunities that will come up before the new year with people retiring, etc.
I'll probably be on leave for about 8 weeks. One of the reasons I want to do it on maternity leave is that, well, I will not have any PTO after maternity leave for a while!
Anyone thinking of doing something like this? Am I nuts??
ETA: As far as leaving LO to interview, my mom and husband are off a lot in December because they are teachers, so one of them could watch him... My MIL is a state employee too, and generally has tons of vacation she takes in December. My cousin (who is more like a sister to me) stays home with my godbaby and would also be an option for a couple of hours.

Me! But mostly because my commute can be an hour or more and days my son is in daycare we don't get home until 6:30-7. I just can't do that with 2 kids. I won't be able to enjoy them. Right now I work 4 days a week so I'm hopin they will let me work from home 2 days and come in 2 days - this I can handle ( I think!)
To be honest I kind of want to work in a school - I interned at a board office through high school and college and really enjoyed it - never mind the hours and vacation time!!!!! plus my husband is a teacher and I'm totally jealous of his summer off right now!!!!!

Teaching is another thing I am thinking about. My second MA is actually in teaching. I've done most of the content work, but haven't student taught yet. I could possibly get in on a permit in a county with high demand before I finish (I live within a not-bad commute of 4 counties). It's actually what I want to do; it's just a crapshoot as to whether a county will need an English teacher and not be able to find one who is certified yet in January.
Better money would be great, of course, for any of these ideas. For all of my education, I make $1 more an hour than my co-worker who does the same job with a high school diploma. It's (more than a) little frustrating... But I knew there'd be better opportunities once I was here a while, and state jobs have great benefits. Plus, you pretty much have to murder someone to get fired or laid off, LOL.
Yes, I'm thinking the same. I want to start to looking for another job as soon as I'm in my maternity leave. My job is extremely time consuming and I need a change.
Oh yeah, definitely. I was hoping to interview mid-Decemberish.
I have worked for a lottery before, haha. I'd suggest a new plan.

To answer your question, I won't be leaving my job. Probably ever. It's too good to be true.
