C-sections

Anybody have a transverse fundal c/s incision?

Vs. near your bikini line? My doctors are planning to do the fundal incision because of my placenta positioning/accreta and I'm having a hard time finding anything substantial online about it. I had a regular transverse incision (near bikini line) for my first c/s.

I'm mostly curious about the recovery vs. a low incision and I am also wondering if it will be harder to breastfeed.

I do get to see my doctors one more time before my c/s so I can always ask them, but I was curious to know if any of you had gone through this. Thanks ladies!

Re: Anybody have a transverse fundal c/s incision?

  • I wish I knew more. I have the bikkini cut. I can say that I am pretty sure it makes a VBAC less likely to not likely at all. I would imagine that it would make breast feeding more difficult just because the incision runs higher than the other. GL with everything! Im sorry I couldnt be of more help, all I really know is the VBAC thing.

  • The incision is the location on your uterus which is transfundal.  LIkely they will go through the same Pfannensteil skin incision and may just need to extend it a bit.  There is always the possibility they'll need to do a vertical skin incision.....but that's really only up to your doctor to decide at the time.

Are they doing a hysterectomy because of the accreta?

Recovery should be pretty much exactly the same unless they're doing a c-hyst.

    Good luck!

they are doing a hysterectomy, and he was saying that they're going to have to go in through the top side of the uterus...they can't go in through the bikini line incision or they'll hit the placenta. Apparently a vertical incision is out too. He was showing me where they're going to have to cut and it's a little below my rib cage. I'm finding references to it online and it definitely sounds like it's the way to go for accreta (not that we really had a choice here) but not a lot of other info about it.

Do you know much about a recovery from the c-section hysterectomy? They just made the definite hysterectomy call at my last appointment and the surgery is next week, so I haven't had a lot of time to talk to them about it. I will see them all next week though one more time.

  • I've done a dozen c-hysts and I've never heard of cutting a high transverse skin incision. General surgeons are probably having apoplexy at the thought. We always did a vertical skin incision, as the Placenta location doesn't affect how you cut the skin. We always cut through the top of the ute too, to avoid hitting placenta. The vertical incision is necessary to have the room needed to operate and get the ute out.
