Multiple names...

Are we crazy? We are giving our little one  FOUR names! Yes, four. We had initially planned on Nicolasa (my late-aunts name) and Gabrielle (middle name).  Then after a few weeks, we decided to give her a Vietnamese name also; my husband is 1/2 Viet. Come to find out Viet middle names are two names hyphenated together. She is now Nicolasa Gabrielle My-Lan. Are we insane for giving her such a long name? We love each name for different reasons. Tried to leave out Gabrielle, but my husband didn't want to part with it... honestly neither did I. I just hope we aren't making her name a bother for her. I really love it, but when we are asked about her name people give us funny looks or ask why she has so many names. Is this odd?

Re: Multiple names...

  • Nah, I have plenty of friends with two middle names. And compared to a traditional Hawaiian name, yours is very concise. DH grew up in Hawaii, but is Korean/Samoan. He has no middle name (kind of a bummer), while most of his friends have entire phrases for their middle names (things like: the dewy mist that rises off the cliffside ferns on a fragrant morning - only written in a language that has approximately 12 letters). If there's a meaning behind it that you love, then I say go for it.

  • Not crazy... I know a lot of people who have given their kids multiple names.  If it's any consolation, our little guy will have 2 middle names (so 4 total if you count our last name) Big Smile

    Totally agree.

If we ever have a daughter, she'll have a first name and two middle names, so I'm on board with the long names thing. :)

BTW, I love Nicolasa. That is beautiful!

  • DS has 4 names.  Some people look at me weird but whatever.  It's much more common in other cultures.

  • I had a friend who gave her son 3 middle names.  And, the kid's first name was Chaos.   I think your name sounds very feminine and pretty...I love it.

  • I used to file employee names with the fed. Multiple names confused the heck out of the system, which required extra work and paperwork on my part. So, I'm not a fan.

Unles you are royalty, it just bugs me. US databases are set up with a three name system. I'm making it easier on my kids' future employers by giving them the standard three names, non hyphenated/asterisks/other symbols.

And really, the only time we hear all 5,264 names is during graduation/wedding ceremonies. All that work for a rare occasion. No thanks.

I don't think it is odd.

Another option: My SIL is Chinese. They gave their boys American names on their birth certificate but gave them Chinese middle names too (just not officially on paperwork). I think the way the Chinese middle names work is that everyone in that generation has the same middle name?? Something like that.

  • Thanks everyone! The names really do have meaning for us. I love that we can get outside opinions so easily here! :)
