i have been pumping all of my daughters meals since she refused my breast 2.5 months ago. i am beginning to get frustrated with this process as i feel it pulls so much time from being able to be with her. i am considering switching to formula when she is 6 months. have any of you done this yet or are any of you planning to switch at 6 months. if so do you have any advise on how to make your boobs stop producing. i have already had mastitis 2 times and have had thrush for about the last month and a half so i am really worried about doing it wrong and making these problems get worse. any suggestions will be appreciated. thanks!
I have pumped since my daughter was 2 weeks of age as she refused to latch. at 4 months i was actually starting to feel deprrssed. i was tired of pumping in the car, at special occaisions, etc. also, renting the hospital grade pump was expensive! i had 2 months worth of breastmilk in the freezer so i knew i was covered until 6 months. i weaned slowly over the last few weeks, i cut each pumping session by a minute every so often and went as long as i could in between pumps. eventually i just pumped to relieve pressure (about half an ounce) until i dried up!
unfortunately we went on vacation for a week and came home to a completely thawed deep freezer and i lost all of my bm so i was forced to switch to formula. my daughter is taking it just fine and thankfully my mom had some frozen stash for me to transition her with.
i had her in the enfamil gentlease but that stuff made me gag just mixing it, so she is on similac advanced now and we both like it much better
(oh and its amaaaaaazing having the extra time to play with my baby!!!)
thanks for the info, i know i will be happy once i do it i am just having trouble taking the leap over... i keep "putting it off for one more day" but since i know breast milk is best i guess its not a bad thing... just want to snap my fingers and have her happy on formula and me happily dried up! haha if only....
Dom isn't exclusively on formula yet, but he has been having half and half since I cannot make enough milk for him.
We have a small stash in the freezer that may last a couple weeks and I'm planning on weaning down on the pumping Like the PP has done once he can handle a greater percentage of formula in his bottle.

I EP'd with DS for almost a year, and basically when you wean from a pump you gradually drop pump sessions.
So if you're at 7 pumps/day right now, drop 1 pump at a time. Each time you drop a pump session, stay at that number per day until you don't have engorgement/pain/lumps/clogs. If you pass a week, drop it anyway. You'll probably find you produce about the same until you get below 4 or 5 pumps/day. I would let your supply level out when you get to 4 pumps before you drop below that. Then drop to 3, then 2, then 1. You'll find when you drop to this number of sessions/day that things will drop off quickly. I pumped twice/day for 2 days and once/day for 1 day and then I just stopped. I was also 11+ mos pp, but I would imagine you'll have a similar experience.
